What happened to this place? Has really gone downhill. Firstly many unique items have been taken off the drinks menu, what happened to the bullshot cocktail? have been coming here for over 15 years and last night will certainly by our last.
They have clearly been cutting costs and no longer give you pretzels and crisps with your drinks.
The bloody Mary which used to be the BEST in HK had a spicy, savoury and thick consistency with a substantial celery stick is now replaced with a watered down mix which tasted terrible.
The Moscow mule we ordered had an old cucumber slice in it and tasted rank, my guest could not finish it.
We had another mocktail in our group and the canned juice smelt off, my friend could not finish her drink. None of us finished our drinks except my beer which comes from a tap. Four of us have had fond memories at certain times of our life here. I certainly have. This is depressing to see.
The captains bar seems to unfortunately have all new staff which have no character are pushy to order drinks and frankly useless and seem like they dont want to be there.
I suspect the Mandarin is putting all it's effort into the Aubry upstairs and forgetting it's classy and iconic bar downstairs. Forgetting the iconic captains bar is leaving the Hotel certainly on the path of losing its charming, unique and traditional character.
Very disappointed and saddened at what we all experienced last night. I didn't bother to complain as it's pointless, Captains bar has certainly lost it's charm. Let's hope the iconic Chinery Bar does not follow the same fate.

Read moreCaptain's Bar at Mandarin Oriental is is a legacy bar from the old days of Hong Kong. This bar has been around for over 50 years. It is classy place with red leather seating, traditional colonial era decor, seasoned waitstaff and a good drink list. Opening hours are 11am to 1am daily.
We visited recently for a couple rounds of drinks. Cocktails are made well. The old-fashioned is bourbon and is a fair mix of stiff and sweet. White Russian was also a well-mixed drink. Drinks are served with chili peanuts and bbq crisps bar snacks, a good complement to the drinks.
You can order lunch at Captain's Bar during weekdays. Dress code is comfortable attire before 5pm and slightly more formal afterwards (no shorts, open toed sandals, etc.)
In the end, Captain's Bar is a neat place for a round or two if want to experience one of HK's traditional, old-school bars. You'll find it on the ground floor next to the check-in counters.
Note that there is a small bar seating at the Chinnery restaurant at MO (1/F) that has a similarly nostalgic atmosphere. For something more modern and trendy, try the M Bar on the 25th floor...
Read moreMy husband and I have started to go to the Captain's bar starting from early this year. Ever since the first visit it always became our go to place to chill and hang out. The interrior is not super hip or flashy trendy but it definetly has its classy charator on its own with history for sure. About 2 weeks ago we went there for my husband's birthday party with friends and they suprised us with a birthday cake and that was definalty another level of customer care and service. I'm not saying this because we got a free cake the reason why it was more supriseing is because they dont do reservations so they didnt know we were coming, we breifly mentioned we might do our party here with some friends during our previous visit there. They remembered and once they saw us coming in prepared the cake for us. The staffs are really nice and friendly and makes us feel like they appreciate our company. Of course the drinks are greate and their Octofest beer special is a good deal as well for a hotel bar. So yes I highly recommend this bar for anyone who have never checked it out or has been but havent been here...
