This is a wonderful local Hong Kong dining experience different to the Chacharnteng. Kam Fai is a family run dim sum eatery that has a small single storefront in the wan chai area. 1/3 of the store front is the entrance with a plastic curtain. The other 2/3 is a window showing the steamers and baskets, with an open window for passersby to order directly with the proprietress. Inside there are 5-6 tables. AC is available but a couple of fans are also in a supporting role. Chinese and English menus available, but no photos. There’s a lot of bantering in Cantonese w regular customers and orders are shouted back and forth. Service is very quick and food can’t be fresher. Portions are generous and are of a very good family style quality. I ordered har gow, chiuchow steam dumpling, and steamed beef balls. I then decided to order 4 other items to have for breakfast tomorrow back at my hotel. On the way out I had a conversation with the proprietress. They have been located in Spring Garden street for decades. Business is tough as they depend a lot on regular older customers. Young people don’t come and the business cannot afford advertising. She can barely eke out enough to support her family. I would urge you to visit Kin Fei as a true authentic hk experience that is likely to disappear in another...
Read moreHad this for breakfast. As I was staying in Wan Chai, I wanted avoid the rush hour of the MTR, made a decision not to try one of those very well reviewed and typical restaurants. I am really glad that I gave this a try. Located just near the Wan Chai Street market, this is not difficult to locate, especially if you walk along Johnston Road. This is really a place patronized by the locals, they did have their menu in English with some typo errors but who cares when you already know that those are typos. The Siew Mai was fresh and had a good bite, tasted as good as many good restaurants back in Singapore. The chicken feet was one of the best I have eaten, black bean sauce was not overpowering, right spiciness and Yam was placed at the bottom to soak up all the essence. My girls love the food here, including the chicken and mushroom steam rice. The beancurd rolls were also very yummy. Rice rolls were a little thick but still ok. Recommended if you are looking to try something local in...
Read moreSuper super local. You are in for a cultural experience. Esp if you come during lunch time on weekday. Will see bunch of local blue collar workers enjoying lunch.
Dim sum wise, super greasy and heavy. Super local flavor. That doesn't necessarily "good" tho. If you are a tourist, and have to choose only one dim sum place, this might not be the best option. But if you want that super street local experience, flavor wise and atmosphere wise, then sure.
Im comparison to hk local joint's service standard, the owners and workers are super kind...
