Lan Fong Yuen is a cozy local restaurant that specializes in serving authentic 撈公仔麵 (lo mein with toppings), a popular Chinese dry mix instant noodle style dish. While the restaurant may not offer a spacious seating arrangement, it compensates with its unique atmosphere. Let's start with the food. Lan Fong Yuen's 撈公仔麵 is undoubtedly tasty and satisfying. The noodles are cooked just right, and the toppings complement them nicely. The flavors are authentic, capturing the essence of this classic Chinese dish. However, it's worth noting that the taste, while good, may not necessarily blow you away. It falls more into the category of enjoyable rather than mind-blowingly amazing. What truly sets Lan Fong Yuen apart is its vibe. The restaurant exudes an ambiance that resonates with many customers. It has a certain charm that beckons people to step inside and experience a slice of local culture. Whether it's the hustle and bustle of the staff or the mingling of guests, there's a bustling energy that adds to the overall appeal of the place. The cozy seating arrangement, while it may be a bit tight, contributes to the intimate and authentic experience. You'll find yourself in close proximity to other diners, creating a sense of camaraderie. This is especially appreciated by those seeking a more immersive and communal dining experience. Overall, Lan Fong Yuen is a restaurant worth visiting, particularly if you're looking for an authentic taste of 撈公仔麵 and a unique atmosphere. While the food may not be groundbreaking, it is still enjoyable, and the restaurant's charm and cozy ambiance make up for any shortcomings. So, if you're in the mood for a comforting meal and a cultural experience, Lan Fong Yuen is a place to consider.

A Tourist Spot More Than a Local Hangout On November 4, 2023, I found myself nestled in the bustling environment of 蘭芳園, sharing an afternoon tea with a friend. Our order: two iced milk teas tailored to our preference for less sugar and ice, a simple chicken sandwich, and a cream-filled bun, a staple in any tea-time meal. The bill rounded up to HKD 101, a figure that left me slightly taken aback. The milk teas alone were marked at HKD 28 each, a price that I found steep for such a basic beverage. Speaking of the milk tea, it was disappointingly bland. The tea base lacked robustness, a crucial component that fell short of my expectations. One aspect that was impossible to overlook was the clientele demographic. A sea of tourists filled the space, while the presence of locals was notably missing. It appeared as though 蘭芳園 had transitioned more into a tourist hotspot rather than a favoured local haunt. The lacklustre service further dampened the experience. The staff was somewhat aloof and unresponsive, falling short of the welcoming and attentive service one would hope for. The word 'crowded' would be an understatement when describing the restaurant's ambience. The congestion did little to contribute to an enjoyable dining atmosphere. In summary, 蘭芳園 seems to be riding the waves of its tourist appeal, with high prices, subpar service, and a lack of authentic local ambience. If you're seeking a true, local dining experience, you might want to look elsewhere.

Milk Tea is the Real Deal Honest unbiased opinion from Canadian-born Asian Guy This is basically an older Hong Kong style cafe and for comparison it’d be like an American diner. So you have to come in with reasonable expectations. It’s by no means fine dining or the prettiest of places but you will get the experience of a legitimate Hong Kong cafe style meal. The Milk Tea is reason enough to come here. The gentlemen in the sleeveless shirt takes his job seriously and puts out a delicious cup of tea. You can get it hot or cold and I generally enjoy the cold one as it’s a nice refreshment on a warm day. Coming here for the first time though I opted for the original hot milk tea. Add sugar to suit your own personal taste. I’m not affected by caffeine so I can’t comment on the strength of the tea but the “tea taste” is strong. Milk teas that I have had at other shops have sometimes tasted watered down. That is not the case here. I found the servers friendly and they chatted with us in Cantonese. Some of them have their quirks and may come off as rude but Cantonese can sometimes sound like an angry language. But this adds to the genuine HK cafe experience and not unlike some of the interesting characters that reside at any diner.

Was in town for work and my local HK colleagues recommended I come here for their signature milk tea and toasted buns with condensed milk. Liked it enough to come back for lunch the same week (had chicken chop noodles with ginger & scallions with a cup of Horlicks), all food & drink were top notch. One thing I noticed was that staff were polite to both locals and non-locals which was a pleasant surprise. Take note the shop itself has a tea stall on the street so it might actually be obscured if you want to enter. Keep your expectations in check - don't expect a fine dining establishment with plenty of space. It can be cramped especially during lunchtime so try not to bring shopping along and be prepared to sit separately if you're in a group larger than 5-6 pax. They open early at 7:30am but also close early at 6pm so breakfast, teatime and lunch are your only options. As someone who used to live in Kowloon side more than a decade ago, I wish I'd known about this place sooner. The slightly faded, old school posters of HK singer Alan Tam on the wall give it a nostalgic charm that's missing from a lot of local F&B establishments. Just need another reason to fly back to HK...

Founded in 1952 and renowned for their classic local beverage's yuan yang and stocking milk tea, Lan Fong Yuen is undoubtedly one of the most historic cha chaan tengs (tea restaurants) in Hong Kong. After waking up at 4 o’clock and watching the sunrise at 6.00 from Victoria peak, I decided to visit the restaurant and indulge in their Macaroni and tomato menu (which also included a piggy bun) along with their traditional milk tea (絲襪奶茶). It is truly the best I have ever had, striking the perfect balance between milk and tea with just the right hint of sweetness. However, I must admit that the food was slightly disappointing compared to my high expectations. The macaroni was overly soft and overcooked. On the brighter side, the instant noodles that my sister and cousin ordered were surprisingly good. Despite this, Lan Fong Yuen remains a must-visit place when you are in Hong Kong. The rich history and iconic beverages make it a true gem in the bustling city, and I highly recommend stopping by to savour a piece of Hong Kong's tea restaurant culture.

Some blogs said that this is probably the oldest still running HongKong style diner (茶餐廳) in Hong Kong, not sure whether it's true. However, it's true that it probably has a very good Ice Milk Tea. Condensed milk bun was da bomb. The second time I was here, the ice milk tea was not as good as my first time though, it was less thick. When you order hot drink, usually it's not sweet, when you order ice milk tea, then it's sweet. Unless I order wrongly, but in several places it's like that. The waiter was nice, communicated with mandarin & some English. You can always ask for English menu & the picture menu for visual aid. It's definitely my favourite place for the whole experience. And it's air-conditioned. Please note that if you dining in, there's a minimum charge of HKD 30/person which is fair. A drink & a bun will already cost > $30. They are a popular place, so come at non peak hours. Location is very central & easy to find. It's just under the Central - Mid Level escalator, opposite 7-11.
