001 is a speak-easy style bar that was once tucked away on Graham Street before closing up shop in 2022. Good news, they reopened at a new, inconspicuous spot within the Tai Kwun. Yes, it is sort of challenge to find (building 13 is all I'll say), but good on you if you do.

If you manage to locate the bar, ring the bell next to the unassuming door, someone will let you in and your evening inside will begin. Visit limits to 90 minutes each. Drink prices are what you expect of high end bars. Mostly, prohibition themed, cocktails are mixed well and taste fine for the amount they are charing. Environs are nice, music during our visit was rather modern which was odd given the theme of the bar. Despite the generally friendly atmosphere and enjoyable treasure hunt-like experience of finding this hidden bar, the new above-ground location simply cannot recapture the charm of the old underground address. The general staff lacked knowledge about the whiskey selection when I asked for recommendations as a non-whiskey drinker.

When one of the more specialized staff members did make a recommendation - suggesting a 15ml pour of Hakushu for $280 HKD - we later realized to our dismay that this was an incredibly overpriced pour as a non-aged statement that retails for a fraction of that price. Me and my boyfriend tried this speakeasy as we have seen it so many times advertised online. If you are looking for a real speakeasy experience, this hidden bar is the spot for you: we had such a hard time to find it in the first place, so not like all the other speakeasies which you perfectly know how to find and lose immediately all their magic, the cocktails were amazing as well the snacks options. We tried quite a few and loved all of them, maybe only the Earl Grey Martini is a bit too intense and bitter for my own taste but it is very subjective.
