Review: Good Italian Food, But Beware the $150 Water Charge**
We visited Gia last night for dinner. The food was genuinely good – flavorful, authentic Italian dishes with generous portions. We enjoyed the meal and left satisfied with the culinary aspect. The service was standard and the atmosphere was pleasant.
However, the bill held a significant surprise: We were charged $150 for tap water for a table of 4.
The Issue: While the restaurant offers "free flow" tap water, they apply a charge for it – a practice highly unusual compared to most restaurants, which typically only charge for bottled water (which we did not order). The Charge: $150 for table water is substantial. While the food prices might be fair, this water charge feels excessive and significantly inflates the total bill. Transparency Problem: We only discovered this charge after getting home and reviewing the bill. It wasn't highlighted or clearly explained during service. Diners deserve to know about such a significant non-standard charge upfront.
Conclusion: The food is good and portions are hearty, making it worth a visit if you are fully aware of and comfortable with their...
Read moreFour of us went here for dinner after a show. The decor and lighting is newly renovated and is warm with a fairly swanky feel, and windows looking toward the Grant Hyatt / harbour. We sat in a booth, which was comfortable. Staff were friendly enough, however, perhaps out of training, did not show any recognition of the irony in telling us we’d have to pay $38 a head for free-flowing tap water, which would have come to almost $160, the same price as a meal for one person. This is ridiculous for a country where tap water is drinkable and basically free. Luckily we had a bottle of our own water on hand, so were able to forego this unreasonable charge. Apart from this, the food was pretty good. Piccante pizza was big and tasty; mozzarella sticks cooked well and hot; hand-twisted truffle pasta and gnocchi were both tasty and al dente but a little salty. Tiramisu was very big (too much for one person) and very nice. Viglione Primitivo 2021 red wine (cheapest on the menu) was just right for me, smooth and medium-bodied. Staff were quietly efficient. Although they were trying hard to be friendly, we felt they could be more genuinely warm and more relaxed, rather than...
Read moreIt’s been a couple years but I am so happy that my all time fave go-to Italian spot is back!!! The food remains as good as the OG spot - but the Fenwick Pier location definitely wins in terms of location and atmosphere.
The truffle salad is UNREAL. It was so delicious we ordered it twice!!!!!
Their truffle pizza is easily the BEST in Hong Kong - the base is light and crisp, the truffle is fragrant, and the sauce is cheesy without being overpowering.
For other mains: The margherita was good but not great. The penne arrabbiata was classic and yummy.
Desserts were spot on. The chocolate fondant is excellent, definitely order double scoop of vanilla gelato to pair alongside the rich chocolate. The berry panna cotta was also good. I’m excited to try the tiramisu next time but I have high hopes.
Overall this is definitely back to being my go-to Italian...
