This McDonald's is not for the faint of heart. I visited on a late Saturday night to get the full-on overnight experience. The clientele was equal parts late night dating couples and poor immigrants taking advantage of cheap sleeping quarters for the down and out.
The food, the touch screen menu, the prices and the fast service were what you might expect from a McDonald's anywhere. The public displays of affection and the sleeping sections, on the other hand, were a bit out of the McOrdinary, to say the least. Also, at one point, a customer (drunk?) went on a lengthy and incoherent tirade against the counter staff until he was finally persuaded to leave with some free food. Quite McUnusual!
The restaurant was basically divided into three sections; closest to the counter were ordinary customers enjoying a midnight snack, in the centre were the couples, enjoying a little privacy in public, and along the back wall were those using McDonald's as a sleeping arrangement (many with suitcases, pillows and "sheets"...and some not bothering to order anything 🤔).
I got a milk tea and a cheeseburger and joined the sleeping contingent for the night.
This is a cultural experience that I would certainly recommend ONCE and it's as good as staying at the Chungking Mansions for the price of a McMeal.
Pro Tip The restrooms were flooded and vile but that just added to the ambience of the experience, I suppose.
It should be noted that overnight sleeping in a 24 hour McDonald's is not exclusive to Hong Kong. I had similar experiences in Shanghai, Beijing and...
Read moreI came here twice during my trip and was hoping the 1st time was a mistake but no. I ordered a Chicken sandwich meal which comes with mayo and lettuce which I also checked on the machine and both times it was served with onion and burger sauce. The staff don't talk to customers, no numbers shouted out, they just pile up the orders on the counter and hope you come get it and take the right order. They don't even check who's taking what. From other reviews of this McDonald's it makes sense that ppl have been given reheated food and old drinks. If ppl don't know how to collect or they pick up the wrong thing obviously there will be issues. The staff don't seem to care tho, I witnessed an English speaking trying to talk to staff but they didn't understand him. Also like others have said, lots of homeless immigrants are just taking up tables. Never been to a McDonald's like it in...
