I’m regular guest at Makarun restaurant in downtown and I must say, it truly is the best restaurant in the area. One of the things that sets them apart is their dedication to providing exceptional service and high-quality food all year round. In a city where 99% of the restaurants close during the off-season, Makarun remains open, which is a testament to their commitment to excellence.

The locals have recognized Makarun as a top-quality restaurant, and after my first visit, I can understand why. The moment I walked in, I was greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff, particularly Stipe, the waiter, stood out as a true professional. With over 10 years of experience at that place, Stipe's knowledge and passion for his job shone through. Following his suggestions proved to be a delightful experience, as he truly knows how to enhance your dining experience.

Now, let's talk about the food. Makarun excels in offering the best quality meat, fish, and pasta. Their homemade pasta dishes are a true delight, showcasing the mastery of their culinary team. Each bite was bursting with flavors and cooked to perfection. The seafood selection, especially the lobsters, was incredibly fresh and delicious.

Whether you're a meat lover, a seafood enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates homemade pasta, Makarun has something to satisfy every palate. Their attention to detail and commitment to using high-quality ingredients truly sets them apart from other restaurants in the area.

In conclusion, if you're looking for an exceptional dining experience in downtown, Makarun should be your top choice. The combination of their year-round operation, recognition from locals, and the expertise of their staff, particularly Stipe, makes it a restaurant that never disappoints. Treat yourself to the best quality meat, fish, and pasta in town at Makarun - you...

Seriously just so bad. Even though it says they don’t open until 12pm, they do coffee/drinks in the morning. The waiter (Kaiyo) was INCREDIBLY rude to us. When taking our coffee orders, my friend asked if she could please have her milk on the side. The waiter rudely responded that they either did “coffee with milk or no milk” and refused to bring her milk on the side. (Side note: we double checked the menu and you COULD just order milk on the side). He also started walking away AS we were ordering! Furthermore, there was no food menu on the table, so we enquired about whether we could have one. The waiter responded that we were sitting in “the wrong tables” to order food (which we didn’t know) and just shrugged - he didn’t offer to move us to a different table or suggest any alternatives. Then, when he came back with the bill, he put it down on the table, uncovered, and in front of all of our eyes it blew away! He just shrugged (again) and walked away, so we could not verify how much our coffees cost! Do not come back to this place, at least, until they get rid of (or reprimand) this waiter!

Edit: The waiter was wearing a black shirt which said “Makarun” on the back. Regardless of whether he works for your establishment or for another which you sponsor, he is a poor representative of your business.

Edit #2: We went back today to confirm. The bar (Bar Po Bota) is, in fact, part of Makarun and is even located at the same address you provided in your reply. Furthermore, we spoke to a Makarun waiter who confirmed that the table we were seated at this morning was a Makarun table. I want to make it clear that the service and general disrespect we received was our primary concern and we are trying to make sure that future customers to this establishment do not have the same experience...

I have to echo what numerous other reviews have stated - this place is wonderful. We were lucky enough to dine when there was only one other table occupied, which departed before our meals arrived. The others in my party ordered a shrimp risotto of some kind (I'm not a fan of fish, so I'm afraid the specifics end there). A small table was brought out and placed next to our dining table, and the dish was prepared right beside us. Very impressive. Less flair for my filet mignon, but... It was the most tender steak I've ever had, so who cares? I typically won't order steak at a restaurant, because while I enjoy it, I usually can't fathom paying the premium that steak commands. Well, here, the steaks are about the cheapest thing on the menu. The staff here understand what "medium well" actually means, and the end result was a steak that was, hands down, the best steak I've ever had. Potatoes Gratin were forgettable, honestly - needed a healthy dose of fresh ground pepper, and still didn't have much flavor, but oh well. Draught beer was tasty and cold enough. The atmosphere and the service here were incredible. My dining partners ask a lot of questions - ones that often challenge the English skills of virtually every non-native English speaking waitperson. Our server knocked it out of the park in answering their every inquiry - polite, patient, and came prepared with recommendations for the indecisive. Payment by card was no problem, even when the others in my party asked to split the check. Had to tip cash, though - be forewarned, but that's not atypical around here. Final warning: If you, like me, are mushroom-adverse, you will find the menu options limited. However, overall, this was a fantastic experience - one all too deserving...

This was our second visit to Makarun - this time for lunch - and once again it was an absolute highlight of our time in Split. The restaurant masterfully combines fresh, local ingredients with modern presentation and preparation, offering a culinary experience that feels both authentic and refined. We were lucky to have Toni as our waiter – his warmth, attention to detail, and genuine passion for food and wine made our visit truly unforgettable. We couldn’t decide on just one dish, so we ended up sharing everything – and it was the best decision we could’ve made! We started with the Sea Selection, a beautifully arranged tasting of seven bite-sized seafood delights, followed by the Roasted Squid Salad – tender squid served over arugula with roasted nuts and capers, absolutely delicious. For our mains, we shared the Sea Makaruni – technically an appetizer, but a must-try signature dish featuring hand-rolled makaruni in a rich cognac shrimp sauce – and a perfectly cooked sea bass fillet with toasted polenta, vegetable ragout, and broccoli purée. We couldn’t resist dessert either: a light citrus meringue with berries and a decadent chocolate cake that blew us away. Each course was paired with exquisite wines from Korčula, the owner’s home island – a lovely personal touch. But honestly, what makes Makarun truly special is the people. Toni’s knowledge and enthusiasm elevated the entire visit. His recommendations, storytelling, and infectious love for great cuisine turned this meal into an experience we’ll never forget. We’ll definitely be back next time we’re in Split. Highly, highly recommended!
