I had high hopes for this place when we visited yesterday. The space is beautiful, the marketing is confident (and ubiquitous), and the neighborhood could absolutely use another spot doing slow-cooked ribs well. Unfortunately, the experience started off mildly disappointing and gradually tipped into surreal.
My friend arrived about ten minutes before I did and sat alone at the table. No one offered her so much as a glass of water, though the room was quiet enough to hear the staff tapping away on their phones behind the bar. I guess they wanted to give her ample time to absorb the glossy flyer on the table featuring a shirtless Ukrainian pop star promoting his concert at Roxy. This became, unintentionally, the most emotionally engaging part of the meal.
Starters arrived with a gap of like 5 minutes, because timing is hard. The chicken soup was watery and was served with meatballs that looked and tasted like a forgotten used tissue that spent the summer wadded up in a coat pocket to be sadly rediscovered come winter. Meanwhile, the much-advertised steak tartare had been processed into a mushy paste, served next to under-toasted frozen baguette slices, and garnished with an earnest but entirely unseasoned handful of arugula. I admire restraint, but this felt like a philosophical stance against flavor.
Our mains arrived while we were still navigating the starters, as if to suggest that courses are a social construct we should simply get over. The mixed plate for 1000 Kč contained what must be the city’s strategic reserve of frozen onion rings (the kind made from a paste with a faint memory of an onion), supported by an equal quantity of cheap fries. We had to specifically ask for any sauce at all for the fries and rings - an unusual twist at a BBQ restaurant, where sauces should shine. After a long pause, we received a sad ramekin of tartar sauce, which apparently the restaurant usually serves with ribs (why?) but not with sides (WHY??).
Beneath these geological layers of beige, there were indeed ribs. They were dry, lacking smoke, and had the texture of something cooked by someone who understands ribs conceptually but has never actually tasted one. The “Asian style snack ribs” were mostly cartilage, and the sausage was as forgettable as the Adele-heavy playlist in the background.
In fairness, the roasted potatoes were good.
I genuinely want this place to succeed. The room and that impressive grill deserve better food, and the concept deserves more care. Everything suggests that they care about being noticed. I just wish they cared as much...
Read moreWe tried this place because it's new and the wood grill looked great. However, the food was extremely mediocre.
Beer was bad. It tasted like unclean pipes, and was not cold enough. No beer mats, and was not up to standard for high quality Czech beer drinking experience, especially for those places specializing in tank beer.
Food was very mediocre. Sauces for ribs were nothing special, at all. Tasted like bad sauce from a jar. Spicy sauce was not spicy AT ALL, and mustard sauce very average.
Potato aioli dipping wedges were very good.
Ribs were not the worst part, by any means, maybe a bit tough, but did not shine like the stars they should be at a speciality rib place.
Croquettes were soggy. Grilled shrimps were 'fine' but left a weird after taste in our mouthes.
We did not walk out of here - and we tried LOTS of their food - thinking anything was that good.
First week, so maybe they get better, but we will not be back...
