That was the most authentic eating-out experience I've ever had. Drinking-out experience, to be more exact. The only thing you order here is food. Drinks just float by in a never-ending stream of huge trays carried by waiters (men only) who offer you just two kinds of beer (dark and light lagers, both unfiltered, unpasteurized and brewed at the place) and two kinds of strong bitter local drinks. But that will suffice to have a good evening and you will likely ignore everything else they have on the menu drink-wise. The waiters deserve a separate review. They put a small piece of paper on your table and take notes of things you ordered so as not to memorize or write down everything for each guest. And this is not a show off, because our room alone, or better to say chamber, could contain around 200 people. And that is not the only room of the place. The scribbles reminded me of interpreting notes commonly used by consecutive interpreters to memorize big chunks of speech. Two guys, trumpet and accordion, played folk music and all that authenticity happens in a basement of an old building with vaulted ceilings. There is even a cabaret stage, but we didn't catch the entertainment. A must when in Prague.

U Fleků in Prague is an experience in itself—if you're looking to dive into authentic Czech culture, this place is a must. Walking in, it feels like you’re stepping into a piece of history, with its old wooden interiors and lively, communal tables that make it impossible not to soak up the atmosphere. This beer hall has been around since 1499, and it shows in the best way possible. The star here is their house-brewed dark and light beer. They don’t even ask; they just bring it to your table when you sit down, and it’s fantastic. Rich, smooth, with a slight sweetness, it’s dangerously easy to drink and perfect alongside the hearty Czech food. We ordered the smazeny syr- done just right—simple, comforting, and packed with flavor. The portions are rather big, so bear that while ordering. Adding to the fun, there’s live accordion music that floats through the hall, giving the place an extra burst of energy. Service is efficient and friendly, even if the place is always bustling. Don’t expect anything fancy; this is all about the atmosphere and a great, no-fuss meal. If you’re in Prague, U Fleků is one of those iconic spots that’s definitely worth a visit. And do not skip the honey liqueur - the best!

Disappointing Tourist Trap with Overpriced Fare I recently visited what I hoped would be an authentic, legendary tavern, known for its traditional beer recipe that’s remained unchanged for hundreds of years. The beer was good – but honestly, no better than what you’d find at any other spot in Prague. The historical allure didn’t quite live up to the hype. We ordered three beers, a shot of Becherovka, and a food platter with three slices of ham, some butter, cabbage salad, a cheese plate with eight small cuts of cheese, bread, and potato rolls with cabbage (see photo) – all for a steep 50 euros. The appetizers were simple and tasted fine but felt overpriced for what they were. The service was also disappointing. Not only did the waiter fail to provide a receipt, but there was also an awkward insistence on cash payments, with an implication that card payments weren’t accepted – only to later reveal they actually were. This left us feeling as though they were trying to squeeze a bit more out of us, reinforcing the sense of being taken advantage of as tourists. In summary, while the idea of historic beer might lure you in, I wouldn’t recommend staying for the food or service. You’re better off experiencing the beer quickly and then heading elsewhere for a meal that’s worth your money.

U Fleků is a lovely spot known as the oldest brewery in Prague, famed for its dark beer. The venue boasts a beer garden, a museum, and a cabaret, though the latter was closed during our visit. We started with honey and spiced shots that were passed around as if they were complimentary, but be cautious—they’re actually charged and felt a bit like a tourist trap. The atmosphere features super long communal tables where you’re seated based on availability. As soon as we were seated, the staff placed a piece of paper on our table with numbers to keep track of our orders for billing at the end, which was an interesting touch. We tried both the dark and light beers, opting for several rounds of the dark beer. It was fantastic—light and smooth, with a flavour reminiscent of Guinness but not nearly as heavy. For mains, we indulged in Prague specialties: pork knuckles and beef in cream, both of which were incredibly delicious! While some of the servers were a bit rude and seemed hurried, others were friendly and engaging. Overall, U Fleků is worth a visit for the atmosphere and the excellent beer, but just be mindful of the extras on the menu!

Let’s separate things: 1) The beer itself has nothing to do with this review. It’s very good, tasty and historical. Amazing to drink a beer made the same way as 500 years ago. For a beer lover (like me), it’s a must to try the two beers from this house. 2) This review is about the food and, mainly, about the service. The portions were awfully small compared to other restaurants, the schnitzel was a joke. Waiters have zero patience and you will seat wherever they want. But the worst was the payment - you get no check to confirm values, they charge using “mental math” and all the process is very rude. Pro tip: TAKE PHOTOS OF THE MENU BEFORE DECIDING WHAT TO EAT, because as soon as you order they will take it away from you. And then do your own math before asking for the bill. Pro tip number 2: DONT TAKE THE HONEY LIQUOR SHOT - it’s a tourist trap and they will charge you for that!!! Pro tip number 3: just go there, taste the beer and go have lunch or dinner anywhere else. Trust me.
