We picked our own fare from the ala carte menu. Came in telling ourselves to experience Finnish- Thai food with an open mind. They have their take on the dishes which we shall not compare to ”what it should taste like” but whether the dish itself was presented and served in the most delicious way possible. Truthfully, some dishes fell slightly short: the coconut bread was not coconutty, instead tasted like a normal bread roll smelled more like yeast and flour instead of a smoky coconut husk aroma or tasting some coconut shreds- then their somtam which is not in the picture, i think is catered for the Finnish taste buds, not spicy even for the 3 Finns with me at the table, but I would recommend it for someone else who cant handle heat.
The stars were definitely the duck jungle curry and the grilled beef. The curry has punchy flavours although the shrimp paste was a little on the overload side- i notice as my nose started to itch but eaten with rice and other dishes, the flavours synchronized. The grilled beef was perfectly made and paired with the green mango salad and sauces. That salad would have been a better choice than the somtam but now we know really fine flavours on that balancing sweet and sour and smoky from the grill beef.
The vegetables were stir fried chinese spinach, the sauce was really good, not the usual garlic oyster sauce stir fry, some coconut milk flavours came thru- and some sambal mixed in. Good combo.
Desserts were wonderful, we had the jackfruit and kopi, grilled pineapple with lime and their take on a frozen snickers😁 cant remember the names but now u know where to get really good dessert tasting like smooth snickers👍🏻👍🏻
But always, with great company so it was a marvelous evening💗
Service wise I wish it was more meticulous but it was the weekend, waited quite a while for table to be cleared and wine glasses we didnt use were on the table the entire time. Overall, it was a bustling enviroment and mimicked well the restaurant enviroments in south east asia, enjoyed...
Read moreIf you're satisfied with this food, you've never had authentic Thai food. Absolute garbage. Incredibly overpriced for the complete lack of quality. And the TERRIBLE service!
Our server was the most disrespectful person I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with and that was compared to the worst host I've ever encountered.
First the host didn't want to seat our party of only 8 - hardly a problem for any professional staff. Then when she finally did seat us, we had what seemed to be the worst server in Helsinki, and in Finland and possibly the planet. She literally said, "Is this going to be one check because I need you to make my life easy!" Then she later said, "Are you hungry, because we're closing (early) and we don't want to keep cooking." It wasn't even 22:00 and they are open until 24:00.
I also observed our server combining open wine bottles. Made me wonder if guests were drinking used, recycled wine. Very gross! I also saw her drinking some type of liquid - was it alcohol while on the job?
Don't believe the good reviews. They must be either from the staff and their friends and family, or from people that don't understand good Thai food and decent, let alone good, service. Just a horrible experience and I deeply regret ever stepping foot in that putrid...
Read more★☆☆☆☆ Overpriced disappointment – nothing as promised
I visited Bon Nam with my family, looking forward to a refined Thai dining experience, as described in their marketing. We ordered a wide selection from the menu — starters, mains, desserts — but unfortunately, none of the dishes lived up to what was promised.
Despite claiming to bring “vivid flavors elegantly from the land of smiles,” there was nothing distinctly Thai about the food. Classic staples like Tom Yum soup weren’t even on the menu, and the mango salad, which had potential, was ruined by an overpowering, overly salted sauce — most likely from pre-made, industrial sources. The same applied to many of the dishes: excessively salty and tasting as if based on store-bought sauces rather than fresh or traditional preparations. Definitely not homemade or authentic.
It was very clear there was no Thai chef — or even someone trained in Thai cuisine — in the kitchen. The flavors lacked balance, freshness, and depth, and the atmosphere, tucked away in a hotel basement, was cold and impersonal — far from anything that could evoke Thailand.
Given the high prices and flashy promises, this place is simply not worth it. The only positive aspect were the waiters from Vietnam, who tried to...
