I wrote this review only to remember this restaurant. Not in a good way. It was/is a BAD CHOICE. We started the dinner discussions with: what is the professionalism and who can be. After we finnished the dinner it is very clear, this place is not for professionals: either gourmets, or restaurant personals. The food is good, but not execellent. I tried the rib eye steak, but nothing impresed me. It was cooked right, but the taste of the meal is far way compare with other experience (the restaurant is positioned on the high level and I made comparison with similar restaurants). The main problem with this restaurant is the service and the attitude to the clients (when I am in the very expensive restaurant I expected a lot from waiters especially). Our waiter was a young lady which most of the time she used a very iritative tone with high speaker level. The main problem it was when we asked for a red wine (they have a list with different kinds of wine and prices). I choosed a Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile. After 8-10 minute of waiting (with main course in the front of us), they decided that don’t have the wine (it was a lot of aggitation and noisy in the searching of the wine). So, we choosed another wine from South Africa (Shiraz). After 5 minutes the same verdict: the wine was finished. Another waiter try to give us some expensive wines from France. He just show us the wines, without any explanation why he recommended this wine. (So, don’t expect to be here somebody with some skill of the somelier). Finnaly, we select a home made wine (very expensive, 24 euros for 0.5 l, from Italy. The price for this kind of wine is normally maximum 4 euro/l). I can not enjoyed too much the steak, because it was cold after a lot of waiting and the wine was a wish-wash. When we left this preciosly restaurant, all the waiters ignore us in the intentional mode (this atitidune is rare but can be). Another example of the (missing) professionalism or less of the education.
Because, they want to compare with USA, I remembered a steak restaurant in New York, with similar prices (maybe higher in Helsinki), which is single common element. The New York restaurant was with classical ambiance (waiters cloting, inside arrangement, impecable white table cloth, etc ), compare with the impersonal style from here. Otherwise, I fully recommended to the all personal from this restaurant to make some practice over sea, to learn which means the quality of the meals and...
Read moreAfter visiting the place yesterday we concluded that although the meats were good, everything else around them (wine, sides, dessert) were average or a disappointment. We ate foods - besides the meat - lower quality than an average cooking at home. Very little care or skill was shown from the chef.
We ordered the special wagyu burger, the filet mignon and the Chateubriand with grilled vegetables and tomato salad with pickled onions. Wine: Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Wine: we received the wines already poured to us in glasses, have no idea what wine we drank...
Meats: the meats were good, no complaints there. Sauces OK.
Burger, in general: super basic fair, large chunk of half-raw tomato was unappetizing. Added sauce was ketchup, pretty much Felix or some other basic. French fries: soft.
Tomato salad: Disappointment. Large chunks of half-raw, pale tomato proves ignorance and / or poor knife skills of the chef. Pickled onions were detected after closer inspection... Tasteless.
Waiter explained that "in Finland tomato is often like that". I'm afraid, that's not true. If you want good tomato, you can find it in Finland too. They have reduced the price of the unsuccessful salad, thanks for that.
Grilled vegetables: Bland. Zucchini and bell peppers.
Dessert: raspberry sorbet.
Service: Stiff but quite friendly. One needs some time to read and understand the dense text of the menu and the rules of the game (e.g. some meats are fixed size while others come in various sizes, etc.), but the waiter came asking for our order so frequently that it was nearly disturbing. But that's ok.
Story of Goodwin: What's with that? It's a mambo-jambo of some Scottish dude 100 years ago, but without any apparent connection to this Estonian steak restaurant...
People usually read the 1 star and 5 star reviews, and the management doesn't react to any of the reviews, so this one is probably just a...
Read moreMy recent visit to "Goodwin The Steak House" in Helsinki was incredibly disappointing. Despite its promising name, the experience was far from enjoyable. To start with, the chicken wings were the worst I’ve ever tasted—extremely dry and nearly inedible. I specifically requested only the wings with no sauce or extras. However, they arrived glazed in barbecue sauce, which wasn’t mentioned on the menu. This disregard for my request was frustrating and unacceptable. The burgers were another letdown. The buns were inconsistent; one companion found the bun slightly crispy but flavorless, while another detected no crispiness or taste at all. The salad on the burgers seemed to be pre-cut, kebab shop-style—something you might buy from a supermarket rather than freshly prepared. This lack of freshness was noticeable and disappointing. The fries were equally subpar—soggy and lacking any crispiness. I would rather have fries from McDonald's or Burger King at this point.Additionally, the service was uncomfortable. The waiter made unwarranted assumptions about our financial status, which felt both unprofessional and intrusive. The noise level in the restaurant was excessively high, making conversation difficult.Overall, "Goodwin The Steak House" was overpriced and failed to deliver a satisfactory meal. Nothing about the dining experience justified the cost. I would strongly advise avoiding this steakhouse. There are better dining options nearby, such as the Chinese restaurant next door, which would likely provide a much more...
