Don’t go to this Coffee Shop!!
As a digital nomad for the past eight years, I’ve worked in coffee shops across 55 plus countries and over 80 cities without any issues—until today. This morning, I visited a Colombian coffee shop near my hotel, excited by its promise. I ordered breakfast and settled in to work. A few hours later, an employee told me that my table was reserved. I agreed to move when the person who reserved it arrived, but no one ever did. Instead, a different employee approached, stating that I needed to leave since I had only consumed breakfast (15 euros) in the two hours I’d been there. I ordered another juice for 6 euros, explaining that I’ve never had problems working from coffee shops, especially when there are plenty of available tables.
Fifteen minutes later, the owner came over and insisted that the table is reserved and I need to leave because I have only consumed a juice (not true). I was disheartened by the way I was treated, particularly because I was the only Black person in the coffee shop during the three hours I spent there.
