What a place and what an evening! We've travelled lots in our life. In various continents in countless countries. Seen a whole lot of wonderful France as well.
And this here was one of the very very best dining experiences in our lifes.
Had a reservation (highly recommended) and were taken care of in the best ways from the moment we've stepped through the door. Lots of staff will take care of you. Your coats, your drinks, your wine, to serve and to clean the table. To help you with the menu. Staff was excellent - all of them. Professional from beginning to end.
The setting is breathtaking. It's the oldest restaurant in Paris. Napoleon dined here before. It's an amazing setting. And we got a wonderful table for two to enjoy the night. The menu has interesting items. There were some specials as well and a lower priced fixed 3-court menu, but we didn't go for that.
Got served some very nice bread with olive oil. A bottle of mineral water with that.
For starters we ordered a portion of Caviar and Foie Gras (Canard) Terrine. Two glasses of Chablis with that.
Caviar was wonderful. Not too fishy, not too salty. Perfect balance of flavours. 20g portion, which was a nice size for one person. The Foie was equally great. Possibly the best one I've ever had ... and I've had many!
For the main we chose one of the Chef's Specials. The beef filet with truffle sauce, mashed potatoes and spinach. The meat was perfect and perfectly cooked by order. Soft, tender, meaty. Amazing. And the truffle sauce was divine. And there was a LOT of truffle sauce - they certainly didn't hold back there. Spinach was great too. High quality. Even the mashed potatoes were amazing. Everything just had such a high standard.
We were pretty full after that. But ordered a cheese platter to share. A nice selection of soft and hard french cheeses. Loved it.
For the main we ordered a bottle of red wine. "Vosne-Romanée" - Les Barreaux from 2019. A Burgundy. And what a Burgundy. Smooth, silky, rich. With balanced tannins. 150 Euros for that....and worth every single cent. It's been a while since we've tasted wine this great.
A perfect evening. Staff, food, setting. Everything top-class (and more). You pay a bit more here, yes (we were aware of that). But you really get quality for the price here. Drinks, food, staff. We've spent about 460 Euros this evening. And really felt it was worth it. I don't mind spending that much once in a while when we get this much in return.
A night we won't forget. Highly...
Read moreWe made dinner reservations last week for last night, the 23rd of June at 8pm. Thankfully after requesting so we managed to be seated inside (even though we never mentioned the indoor dining room whilst making reservations but we refused to sit outside by the entrance door when they initially had a table there for us - my tip when making reservations - always state where you would like to be seated ie. inside / outside ). Anyway so we ended up in the ever so gorgeous main dining room, next to the door to the outside terrace which leads to the gardens of the Palais Royal.
I would give 5 stars to the absolutely gorgeous setting, and service which was extremely sincere, attentive and detail orientated from the moment you walked in until paying the bill. However the food was nothing exceptional - rather quite ordinary and I've had much better at higher ranked but not Michelin restaurants in Paris. I ordered the starter (carrot salad) , main (chicken) and dessert from their weekly menu whilst my other half had the fish. The carrot salad was delicious indeed but the chicken was nothing special. In fact when my other half asked how it tasted, I replied its just chicken. He is French and once he tasted it, he also agreed that it was nothing special. His fish on the other hand was excellent. I really enjoyed my dessert which was on the other hand my favourite dish along with my starter - the fresh carrot salad.
If you are looking for a really very Parisienne type of magical and elegant place with splendid views, definitely come here. However remember you are coming for the setting and the service - not the cuisine. Also walking out and seeing the jardin de Palais Royal as the night is out is just beautiful. Do take a walk around in the garden as it is just absolutely beautiful and generally calming as there is...
Read moreWe found this place while looking for a Michelin star place that serves good portions for good prices. It is on the edge of the palace gardens, which was nice to walk around while waiting for the reservation. We took an Uber here without a problem, and then walked to the Chatelet Les Halles train station afterward which was not a bad walk. We were welcomed in very warmly and sat in the main historical dining room. Slowly but surely the dining room filled up. They offer the menu in French and English. All the members of the staff spoke English well and had no problems communicating in both languages. Every single staff member made sure our needs were met, clearing our plates, giving new silverware, making sure our water was refilled. We ordered the salmon appetizer to share, which they split on two plates for us which was nice. We ordered one of the chef’s special of the beef tenderloin, and one of the pork, which the server told me was slow roasted. The beef tenderloin was very tender and flavorful. The pork was tender and the mushrooms underneath were super flavorful and paired well with the pork and the sauce. We shared an éclair for dessert. It was large, which is good because the price was a little high. However this is the best éclair I have ever had. It was cooked perfectly, and had the perfect crisp, with the most flavorful cream on the inside. It was a perfect ending to the meal. We also had a great red wine, and a sweet white wine. They were helpful with the pairing as well. We were helped by all the staff members in the restaurant and we never felt ignored, and always felt welcomed. Overall we really enjoyed our meal here, and...
