As bad as our experience was, I was shocked to see three other poor reviews posted yesterday afternoon/evening for the same time we were there… surely a sign something was very wrong yesterday (Sunday 18 September) firstly we waited quite a long time to be seated on the separate terrace, despite many many vacant cleared tables, ok that’s minor- but the two staff members standing chatting, both with their backs to the patrons while a line formed behind us. Not fussing with the cutlery or doing things, just chatting.
Finally we were seated and the blonde young lady waved her hand that we could use the QR code on the table. She went to seat others who’d lined up behind us and gave them menus? After quite a while a young man came to take our order, but it’s paris so we know it’s not usually ‘rush rush’ so that seemed fine. It was almost an hour after being seated that our food arrived, and my friends hot chocolate. The drink I ordered never materialised and it was impossible to catch the eye of the staff to ask where it was as it was like they were actively avoiding eye contact.
I will give that the food was delicious, but our empty plates were left on the table as other tables around had food delivered, removed and desserts brought. Again, we weren’t able to catch anyone’s eye despite direct eye contact then finally resorting to holding a hand up in the air permanently looking like a fool. Finally the young blonde lady came over and said ‘you want the bill?” (Exact words, no, did you enjoy your meal, would you like a\dessert? Tea? Coffee? Hot chocolate? None of that) No, we wanted dessert thank you- which the young man had known as one of us was going to order dessert when we ordered our mains- he said no wait, order after. So she giggles shrugs her shoulders and says oh there’s not much left now and came back to tell us what was there- not by name but number which she rattled off so fast I had no idea what it was, while laughing at how few choices there were now- after making us wait all that time.
I’d also wanted hot chocolate and told her so, but was that even offered? No, she continued to giggle and shrug. I was so disappointed I just said ok bring us the bill…. Which was the wrong bill. She seemed semi surprised and walked off for another try. The second bill was wrong too- it contained the drink I never got. So she walked off to try again, only to see her a couple of minutes later seating other patrons and giving menus, chatting to some tables, and she continued doing so for at least five minutes while we waited- again. Eventually we gave up and went to the staff desk where the young man was standing (first interaction since he’d delivered our food) While we waited for him to prepare the THIRD bill, I asked him politely what had happened to my drink? He simply said ‘that’s not my fault’ with not even a simple ‘I’m sorry’.
Even paying the bill was ridiculous as the roll in the card terminal ran out and it required two of them and a discussion to replace it?
In all we were there for two hours, from around 3pm. All I had to drink was the tap water carafe, no dessert, no hot chocolate. And more importantly, no apology for the incorrect bill, for being ignored, for no desserts left, for missing my drink. And to see three other people had experiences so bad they felt compelled to write one star reviews just yesterday...
Read moreI decided to stop by this branch of Angelina while walking over to the Luxembourg Gardens with my family. We are big fans of their chestnut Mont-Blanc desserts. While the desserts were excellent, I did not appreciate being asked whether I want to pay extra for my dessert.
I am sick and tired of being asked, “Would you like to add something to the bill for the service?” every time I visit an Angelina. In France, the question is a red flag and completely inappropriate. Waiters are paid living wages and the service charge is automatically included in the amount you pay by law. The French do not tip when they dine because they are aware of the legal requirements, and tourists should not be expected to either.
Every time I am asked the question of whether I want to leave something for the service at Angelina, I always respond with: “Do your French customers ever tip you?” The answer is always, “Well, not really, no.” Well, then perhaps you should stop asking the question to unsuspecting visitors.
Americans also need to stop being naive and polite to the point where we develop a reputation for being a nation of morons. When you are asked about whether you would like to add a service charge to the bill, start asking uncomfortable questions to your waiter. For example, another question I normally enjoy asking is, “A French lawyer I knew from work mentioned that giving the impression that a service charge is the responsibility of the customer when presenting the bill is actually against the law, what are...
Read moreThis museum only had about 30 works of art and about 20 artifacts in total. The entrance was €12 and €4 for the audio guide. €16 total. When I reached the end, I thought I will find several more room and artifacts but that was not the case. I was at the exit. :-( If I knew how small it was, I would have gone to le Louvre again and visit the other 2 floors I wasn't able to see on my first visit. If you are on a budget, DO NOT COME HERE. I would have preferred spent this money in a nice meal sitting at a nice restaurant any day of the year. If you have tons of money to throw away, then come here. It took me 40 minutes to go through the entire museum and I listened to every description of every painting from the audio guide. This place is 1000 sqt. I paid €16 with audio guide at the Louvre and I walked 18 km for 6 hours straight inside and I was not able to see it all. So as I said, better to go to the Louvre a 2 nd times and enjoy all the floors than leave the Louvre without seen it all and come to this museum that has very very very little to offer. I will price the entrance of this museum to €1 when compared to el Prado in Madrid or Le Louvre in Paris. I'm not saying that what's inside it not nice nor that it doesn't worth your time to see. What I'm saying is that it is super super super overpriced for what you get...
