This was very poor sushi, and we should have known the second we walked through the door, as we where met with a pretty strong fishy smell... We ordered a variety of dishes to share so we could try what they had to offer. Even do that ordering was pretty hard as the waitress could have been a mute. The result was that we didn't get one of the ordered dishes. When we asked what the difference was between the kinds of Sake, we where met with... nothing. When we pushed for an answer it was that she didn't know as she had never tasted them (or Sake at all, that still remains a mystery). The food arrived and the dish Spicy Tun Maki was to our surprise tuna mousse.. not a spicy mayonnaise together with some tuna. The texture and taste was horrible and we didn't touch it after we had tasted it. Ohh it wasn't spicy either. Another thing is, that there wasn't any soya sauce on the table and we never got any as well.. As we where almost finished eating we overheard that the table next to us where trying to pay, but to their surprise you can only pay with cash... The poor guy was gone for 15 minutes trying to find a ATM machine. To our luck we just had enough cash, and when we asked how they can run a big restaurant without accepting credit cards the answer was "there is a sign at the door stating it" When we left I had a good look at their entrance that's is covered with 10-15 stickers from Yelp, TripAdvisor etc. and in this mess there was a sign, easy missed, and in German only. JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Will I recommend this to...
Read moreThe food was okay, but the waitress was weird and demanded tips.
The waitress kept correcting our pronunciation - we read "gyoza" with a "z" and she kept repeating it as "gyoya" with a condescending nod. I mean, she's probably right but after 2 of us (we were 4) said it with a "z" she could have just accepted that we are clueless foreigners and took the rest of the order. Nope, she kept repeating the correct pronunciation (and not in a very nice way).
We could not pay separately because "card payments only beyond 30 euros", so I decided to pay for all of us (we were 4, the bill came to 52 euros) since we didn't have any cash with us. She presented us a bill, and she had scribbled "tips not included in the final amount" with a pen on the bill. I ignored it and proceeded to pay. Then she stopped me, and pointed me to the "tips not included" part in the bill. I paid 3 euros extra (she wasn't happy with that - didn't even say thank you) just because I was with colleagues and didn't want to create a scene.
This isn't the US. We are not obliged to pay a tip. If you want more money just...
Read moreI can rate Ishin as 3-4 star considering their edible semi Japanese food with reasonable pricing (clearly, this is not the level to be able to open a restaurant anywhere in Japan though).
But their waiters/waitresses at this branch are just horrible. They are not attentive and they don't seem to show any sympathy for the customers waiting to order for a while. To be fair, the average customer service in Berlin is fairly low compared to other European cities, the service here is far lower. They are rude and unhelpful.
*I paid 10 euros for my 7.2 euro bill and the waitress only gave me 2 euros back. Then she asked if I needed more change. That never happened to me anywhere else. It is customary to pay 5-10% tips but this place no way deserves as much as 14% of tips as...
