I really absolutely don’t understand how this place has so many good reviews. The only good thing was schnitzel (I am not going to rate French fries from air fryer, I have a bit of respect) itself and beer. Let me start from how I was treated from the beginning when I entered the restaurant. There is absolutely no customer service whatsoever. The waitress was there probably as a punishment.
I approached her asking if I may sit by the free and clean table I saw and I literally pointed it. It wasn’t reserved for anyone. She looked at me, passed me menu in German (idk, maybe they don’t have English menu in such touristy spot) and told me “here” pointing at dirty table that people just stood up from. I thought “ok, can’t judge yet”. Then she took my order, I ordered schnitzel as I wanted it, didn’t even complain or ask about English menu or what is it served with because I already felt so intimidated by her look and approach that I just hoped I made the right choice. Not a single question if I need anything else, how is it served. Not a single interaction. I got my beer, then.. my shnitzel. And frozen fries. Ok, they were baked, but I was hoping they would at least be made from fresh potatoes… and of course nothing else.
Not a single “enjoy your meal”. I ate a bit of schnitzel, which was good, I admit. I caught her sight so I asked her to approach me. I politely requested the receipt and I said I would like to pay with card.
“cash please” was the response. Not a one more word. Nor question about my experience or meal. NOTHING. I was being ignored from first second I went there. I god a bit annoyed at this point. I travel a lot and I work in customer service as well. This is unacceptable. I said exactly this: “are you serious? You didn’t inform me I won’t be able to pay with card when I came to restaurant nor when I was making the order”. How would I know in the city center in European country I won’t be able to use my card??? “No cash?” “That’s exactly what I mean, I have no cash” “Come with me” I heard. I couldn’t believe my ears. But I politely followed the lady inside the restaurant. She lead me to the bar where I heard a tiny “oh- oh “ from a bartender. It’s like she saw that before. I ignored this, as I wasn’t sure if it’s related to me for sure. Then I saw a card machine and the lady that was serving me literally showed me this to pay. Not a single WORD. I paid, but it wasn’t worth it. I said that this is the worst customer service I ever experienced in my life. And I do eat at restaurants a lot. Unfortunately I was too tired to even argue and ask for Menager, as the waitress was way older than me. I really wanted to be understanding af the beginning but this awful experience continues till I left the...
Read moreI had the pleasure of dining at Zum Standesämtchen as my very first meal upon arriving in Frankfurt, and I couldn’t have asked for a better way to start my trip. The restaurant is located in an absolutely prime spot — right by the famous Römer square. Sitting on the outdoor terrace, I was able to enjoy my meal while taking in the beautiful view of the historic Römer buildings and the charming old town atmosphere. It was like having a front-row seat to Frankfurt’s most iconic landmark.
The service was friendly and efficient, which made the experience even more enjoyable, especially after a long flight. The staff were welcoming and attentive without being intrusive, and they happily recommended some of the restaurant’s signature dishes.
Of course, I couldn’t leave without trying their famous pork knuckle, and it did not disappoint. The skin was perfectly crispy while the meat inside remained tender, juicy, and full of rich flavor. It was served with traditional sides that complemented the dish wonderfully, including sauerkraut and hearty mashed potatoes. Every bite was comforting and satisfying — exactly what I needed to warm up and settle in after arriving.
Beyond the food itself, what made the experience extra special was the unique ambiance. Whether you’re sitting inside the cozy rustic dining area or outside overlooking Römerberg, Zum Standesämtchen effortlessly combines the feel of traditional German hospitality with postcard-perfect views. It’s also conveniently located, within walking distance from many of Frankfurt’s main attractions, making it an easy stop whether you’re exploring the city center or just arriving like I was.
Overall, I highly recommend Zum Standesämtchen to anyone visiting Frankfurt — whether it’s your first meal in the city or just another stop on your culinary tour. The combination of excellent location, delicious food, and warm service creates a truly memorable dining experience. I will definitely be returning on...
Read moreSchnitzel-Soaked Serenity on Römerberg Square! Wandering Frankfurt's fairy-tale old town after a morning of cathedral climbs and cobblestone meanders, we craved a spot to plop down and soak it all in. Zum Standesamtchen beckoned from the edge of Römerberg Square—like a postcard come to life, with its half-timbered charm framing the bustling plaza and that iconic town hall silhouette. We claimed an outdoor table under the sun-dappled umbrellas, and just like that, lunch became our love letter to the Main.
We dove headfirst into classics done right: a golden-crusted schnitzel that shattered into buttery bliss with every bite, paired with creamy camembert that melted into oozy perfection—decadent without the guilt (okay, a little guilt). Washed it down with a frothy German beer that hit crisp and malty, then pivoted to a great red wine, velvety and bold, like it was bottled from the Rhine itself. The views? Unbeatable—people-watching the square's carousel of tourists, street musicians, and locals hustling by, all while the Main River whispered in the distance. Pure, unhurried magic.
Our server, Brenda, was the spark that lit the fire—amazing doesn't cover it. With a laugh that echoed the bells and recommendations that felt like insider secrets, she turned our meal into a conversation, refilling glasses with just the right flair. We were so smitten, we circled back later that afternoon for escargot, and oh, what a encore! Tender snails swimming in a molten sea of gouda cheese—rich, garlicky, and so incredible we scraped the ramekin clean, dreaming of seconds.
Hands down, our favorite haunt in Frankfurt am Main—a cozy corner where flavors flirt with history, and every visit feels like coming home. If you're square-side, sidle up to Zum Standesamtchen. It's not just lunch; it's legend. Prost to...
