Our very first introduction to one of Hungary's local foods was via Granny's Lángos. The cozy diner is located on a side street, so finding it has been a totally nice surprise. It was the local flavor that we didn't know we actually needed. Lángos is fried Hungarian bread similarly garnished like pizza. The original flavor, as explained, has sour cream, cheese, and garlic. But Granny's Lángos has delectably evolved their flavors. We also selected one with sausages and green pepper and were blown away. It seemed like a very simple dish, but it was truly delicious. It was filling. The diner itself was very inviting. It lived up to its name because it made us feel like we were just crossing the street "over to Granny's house," where the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The owner-operators were very nice and accommodating. They even served us dessert Lángos (chocolate-drizzled) on the house. Dining there and partaking in the dishes were Hungarian memories that will stay with us. We'd love to go back someday, so we hope that Granny and her Lángos thrive...
Read moreWe were looking for good lángos, because many places in Budapest are just tourist traps. Unfortunately, this one was no better — maybe even worse. The place is called “Grandmother Lángos,” so I expected something homemade and comforting, but instead it was run by a rude woman at the counter.
The lángos dough was heavy, not crunchy, and topped with some peppers and chicken. It cost €11, and honestly, I can make a better dough at home. The lemonade was €5.50.
The worst part, though, was the rude service. When I asked for extra ketchup because the lángos was dry, she wanted to charge me extra. After I complained, she gave it to me for free — but with a terrible attitude. Also, the waitresses don’t seem to handle payments; only the rude blonde woman at the counter does, which makes me think the waitresses don’t get any tips.
This is yet another example of bad lángos in Budapest. Don’t waste...
Read moreI had the chicken and vegetable lángos. While ordering, I had a misunderstanding reading the menu. In the description it said, cheese available upon request. To me, it meant that it would not be made with cheese but cheese is included in the price if the customer wants it (kind of like adding nuts to an ice cream sundae). Apparently, my assumption is not true. Within the context of the description, this upsell is very deceiving to the customer🤷♂️ I tried relating to the cashier but she just got defensive. I ordered it (with cheese) anyway because it was not that big of a problem for me💁♂️ But, as I was eating, I looked around trying to enjoy my surroundings with my meal and after the second time of noticing her staring and glaring at me, it made the experience uncomfortable😦 Anyway, while the food was tasty, it could have used more sour cream......
