Read moreI chose to eat here with my daughter Friday evening after seeing the 4.8 star rating. It was very busy and we had to wait, which was fine. We sat outside, end table. The food tasted OK but we both had very upset stomachs the next day and we had only eaten supermarket food so we know it was this meal (I'm used to eating lots of different types of food including very spicy). The tall waiter running the outside (who must be the one in the negative reviews) served us, so I was aware of his attitude. We ordered a Lecsó to share, Csirkepaprikás, Budapest csirkeragu, and drinks, but the waiter is only interested in persuading you to order more. "I strongly recommend you order the bread", then turning aggressive when I asked how much and then saying no thanks. A guy on the table next to us asked a different waiter where his bread was because it hadn't turned up and the tall waiter came out and told him off in front of everyone for asking the other waiter and he should have asked him, really loud, trying to embarrass the guy. Fortunately, he wasn't having any of it and argued back, and after that, the tall waiter kept apologising. At the end, the tall waiter tried to get us to have the shot that they charge extra for, and when I refused, again he turned aggressive and showing me the Italian pinched finger gesture. Luckily he went for a smoke break when I wanted the bill, so I didn't have to endure his aggressive persuasion when it comes to the tip. As others have noted, 15% service charge is already included, but when the other waiter asked for more, he said the service charge was for the kitchen staff, this is for the waiters. Maybe if the tall waiter had a better attitude, I would have added a tip on top of the service charge, but he ruined the evening. And to preempt the response, no, I'm not a competitor (which seems to be the default response to negative reviews), and we were both polite and friendly...
Read moreHonestly, this place is amazing.
Welcomed in heartily and ushered to a comfy table with its own heater (and this was inside - so they must have sensed our weak British constitutions), we were told that their usual spiritual leader and guru, Dexter (photo in one of the pics), wasn't with us tonight.....and Claudia was in charge.....
Was this important? Well, I don't think so if the food and atmosphere was anything to go by. OK, it was a Saturday evening, but the place was rocking; one particularly joyous and ever so very drunk (but equally well-mannered) birthday group kept everyone smiling.
Here at Parasztkonyha, while the menu lists only 20 dishes (including starters and desserts), the delicious food that arrives is seemingly served only in substantial portions by an army of wonderful, friendly and very efficient staff (ours was Bernadette - big well done). It was a weekend, and we booked the night before - and a very wise decision it proved to be, as it was very busy.
The stuffed cabbage appeared to be just that; what looked like an entire cabbage reduced to its expansive leaves and stuffed full of yummies and covered in more yummies....and beyond the bounds of contemplating finishing it all. The beef stew with egg barley (which is what I had), I just about managed to finish, though after we left, transport other than walking (a wheelbarrow perhaps ?) would have been gladly accepted.
Make sure to have the hot pepper sauces, brought to the tabe in jars with a spoon in. Absolutely the perfect accompaniment - especially to the beef stew.
Drinks aren't cheap here, but I'll forgive them that, as their cabbage bills must be enormous.
Of the many restaurants we went to on our trip to Budapest, this was easily the best and if you are in the area, it would be well worth the trip to visit.....but probably best to book. Whatever it means, you might even...
