Anadi Cabin – Dharmatala, Kolkata – 3.8/5
Date of Visit: December 1, 2024
Overview
Anadi Cabin is a legendary eatery in Dharmatala, Kolkata, renowned for its iconic Mughlai Parathas. A favorite among locals and nostalgic foodies, this spot has been serving traditional Bengali comfort food for decades. As a seasoned traveler and foodie, I was eager to experience its charm, but the visit left me with mixed feelings.
Ambience and Atmosphere
The ambiance at Anadi Cabin is old-world and rustic, retaining the charm of a bygone era. However, the place is in dire need of a deep cleaning. The hygiene standards are highly compromised, with greasy surfaces and a general sense of neglect. While the food draws crowds, the lack of cleanliness detracts significantly from the overall experience.
Food and Specialties
Mughlai Paratha: The star of the menu, this dish lived up to its reputation. Flaky, golden, and stuffed with a delicious mix of eggs and minced meat, it was flavorful and satisfying. Kosha Mangsho (Mutton Curry): Tender and rich with spices, it paired beautifully with the paratha. Fish Fry: Crispy on the outside and juicy within, the fish fry was well-executed and complemented the hearty meal. Service
The staff were friendly but very rushed due to the high demand. Service was quick, and food arrived piping hot, but don’t expect detailed attention or recommendations.
Pricing
Anadi Cabin is extremely budget-friendly, offering hearty portions at pocket-friendly prices. It’s perfect for those looking for authentic flavors without splurging.
Unique Points
The nostalgia and authenticity of Anadi Cabin set it apart. However, it’s worth noting that the outlet opens at 1:30 PM, not 11 AM as listed on Google, which can be inconvenient for those planning an early lunch.
Recommendations and Tips
Must-try Dishes: Mughlai Paratha, Kosha Mangsho, Fish Fry. Hygiene Tip: While the food is delicious, the compromised hygiene might be a deal-breaker for some. Consider this a spot for adventurous foodies who prioritize taste over ambiance. Timing Tip: Plan your visit post-1:30 PM when the outlet actually opens to avoid waiting. Final Verdict
Anadi Cabin offers a slice of Kolkata’s culinary heritage with its flavorful dishes, particularly the Mughlai Paratha. However, the dining experience is dampened by poor hygiene and a neglected environment. While it’s worth a visit for the food alone, a deep cleaning of the premises is long overdue to match the legacy...
Read moreMaybe, to an outsider, everything there is unlikable. It's located in a quite congested area. Usually (especially during busy hours) the restaurant is full. So one should expect to wait just in case. But then, Not a lot of space outside to stand. You will be struck by people (sometimes inadvertently!) who are walking on the pavement. There is Little room within as well. No air conditioning is available. Except early January the whole year will be sweaty and hot to visit such area and place. However, the reason I'm writing this review is to suggest this destination to those who appreciate heritage. Someone who appreciates tradition, learns from history, and is willing to absorb the past would undoubtedly enjoy this location. For that instant, they will put aside their agony and enjoy the tradition. In 1925, this joint was constructed! It's in such a great location. Imagine how many well-known people loved it at the time it was built. That consistently evokes a unique sense of thought. I advise you to check this site out at least once. I've heard recently that the owner's behaviour is lacking or that the meal quality has declined. However, I didn't encounter any strange activity throughout my more than ten visits. Furthermore, everywhere and in everything, quality will constantly decline. Thus, this is the ideal moment to seize before it's too late. Not to mention, the location is just a short distance from a metro station. Thus, a simple escape from the chaos, if needed. And one more thing to add, which might motivate one even more is the price. The cost of the dishes are really reasonable. So...
Read moreAs a long-standing institution in the heart of Kolkata's Esplanade, Anadi Cabin has been serving up classic Bengali cuisine for decades. However, a recent visit revealed a disappointing experience that failed to live up to the restaurant's reputation.
The food at Anadi Cabin was nothing like what we expected. The dishes lacked the authentic taste that the restaurant was once famous for. The famous Mughlai Paratha, which was once the star of the menu, tasted bland and lacked the rich flavour that made it so famous. The same goes for the other dishes we tried, which were all underwhelming and failed to impress.
Another issue we faced was the service. The waiters seemed disinterested in their work, and it took a long time for the food to arrive at our table. Even the once-famous Chai that the restaurant was known for, was a disappointment as it tasted like a regular cup of tea that you can get anywhere else.
It is sad to see such an iconic restaurant lose its authenticity and quality over the years. Anadi Cabin seems to have lost its touch and is now failing to keep up with the ever-changing food scene in Kolkata. The food quality has drastically gone down, and the service was below average.
In conclusion, Anadi Cabin, once a go-to destination for classic Bengali cuisine, has failed to maintain its authenticity and quality. The taste of the food was subpar, and the service was lackluster. The restaurant needs to reinvent itself and return to its roots if it wants to retain its loyal customers and...
