As a muslim traveller and being first time in Ubud, Bali, halal food options are not limited as there is growing demand for it. You just need to Google for them.
Tucked along the main road is Warung Ijo. They served mainly Indonesian dishes and offer set meals too! I was the only diner when I got there at 11 am but the kitchen was busy preparing orders for delivery. They are striving from the locals really. After all, it is a warung and not a fancy kind of restaurant that the bule would probably prefer to dine in.
They ran out of Gurame fish so I opted for the Mujair instead (a species of Tilapia; fun fact you can search how this fish got its name).
I had the meal set with traditional Balinese spices (it has almost similar taste of Singang dish which is an aromatic fish soup that mum used to cook). So, this dish brought back memories and tastes like home cooked. Itâs like a peasantâs food, simple yet tasty. I could imagine the Balinese people eating this breaking from toiling in the padi field. Carb from the rice, protein from the fish and lightly blanched greens. No Indonesian food is complete without the cabe and sambal mata. Have all this combo, good days!
You got to have the simple deep fried tofu and spicy sambal, served hot! Then you can explore Ubud with a smile just...
Read moreI really enjoyed my visit to Warung Ijo Ubudâa bright, budget-friendly green-warung smack in the heart of Ubud. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, with low Asian-style tables, open-air seating, and the comforting hum of locals pausing for a quick meal. I opted for their Nasi Campur buffet, where I could choose my own dishes right in front of the open kitchenâit felt like a personal, home-style cooking experience. The food selection was vast and fresh, although Iâd stick with the buffet rather than ordering from the Ă la carte menu, which can take longer and use stronger Indonesian spices. Prices are wallet-friendly (tax included!), and they even treat you to a banana at checkoutâsmall touch, big smile. A few quirks: thereâs no AC, signage is subtle so the narrow entrance is easy to miss, and parking is a wee trickyâbut the central location and genuine local charm more than make up for it. Overall, Warung Ijo is a fantastic pick for an authentic, affordable...
