This is a magic place full of talented artists, a beautiful family, and really incredible cooks. I discovered Trattoria La Foglia on a whim, scouring the whole of Italy for a lovely nonna-run restaurant to share good food and lots of wine with friends and family for our wedding. When I came to visit in March, I entered, announced myself, and was immediately greeted with applause by a group of locals (presumably regulars) who were just made aware that I was there to discuss my wedding dinner. I dined on deeeeelicious pasta con le sarde and their famous mussels tucked in lemon leaves while chatting with Luciana and her husband Gianfranco and admiring the incredible antiques and art covering the tables and walls. It was this singular meal (+ the ambience + + the warmth of the family and fellow diners) that brought us to Sicily for our wedding. The second visit was for our wedding reception dinner this past October. Luciana set up a beautiful salon outside for apertivo (not unlike the set up you see outside the trattoria on sunny days) followed by a delicious and abundant dinner of timballo, cavateddi alla norma, polpette, etc etc etc. The team worked tirelessly to make every minute perfect and even accommodated our vegan and gluten free guests. It was the best day of all of our days, all thanks to my angels at Trattoria La Foglia. Photos don't do it justice--it was like walking into a movie set. More than we could have ever imagined, an absolute dream. So if you decide to come on a whim, even if not for a wedding feast, please for us...enjoy the food and savor the magic of this...
Read moreThis is an absolute hidden gem on Ortegia. It's a very unassuming restaurant on a side street near the water. There are seats outside on the street and they create the most romantic atmosphere with soft music playing. It's a family run business with the husband as greeter and seats you and offers water and menus. The mother and another lovely staff member take the orders and wait the tables. The menu is handwritten and full of options for every taste. We ordered a lemon and ricotta pasta for starter and it was so different to the usual tomato based pastas and it was delicious and so much for 2 people to share. My wife ordered the swordfish for main and the presentation was so nice and the food tasted unbelievable. I ordered the fillet steak and it was cooked medium to perfection and melted in the mouth. Both dishes came with a variety of sides but both very different. The steak came with root vegetables seasoned perfectly. It also came with a cous cous and a frittata type spinach thing that was so tasty. The swordfish came with a black rice side that was also amazing. It also came with more sides that were all unbelievable. A real medley of flavours. The price was fantastic for what we ate and we also had a bottle of wine and coffees. Can't recommend this place enough. Compared to other places on the island that claim good food this place tops them all. I will definitely be back. Thanks for an...
Read moreDecorated in traditional fashion, the Restaurant seemed promising. However, individual who greeted us upon our entry seemed distracted. We sat at a nice table, but waited as other, later arriving, tables got bread, water, and service. When we did get service we ordered wine, asking for a bottle of Nero d’ Avola. The server returned, opened the bottle and poured, without showing the us the bottle. I immediately recognized that the wine was wrong. They had served us Etna Rosso. When I pointed this out, the server showed her annoyance, and looked as if to say “what do you expect me to do?” She finally did bring us a bottle of the right grape. Not the bottle I ordered, but considering her attitude I thought it better not to make an issue of it. Service the rest of the night was cool. We had to ask for bread, which only arrived after the appetizers. Over all a...
