We visited this place for our dinner since it was recommended as the top 1 economical yet delicious eats in Venice for authentic Venetian cuisine.
We order a platter of different 'Cicetti's'. The lady who helped us was kind enough to recommend some of her personal favorites and at the same time letting us in into the local classics. She also helped me select the right red wine that goes with our selection. We also ordered the Sardines's saor. The "saor" is a typical dish of the maritime tradition of the Venetian Lagoon, it dates back to 1300 when, given the need for sailors and fishermen to keep the fish as long as possible, this "sauce" was created. The fish was placed in a bowl and, between one layer and the other, was placed one of onions cooked in a para over low beat with the addition of wine vinegar and, sometimes, white wine, raisins and pine nuts. Historically, the addition of onions was linked to the aggression and elimination of bacteria which, in the absence of refrigerators, led to the deterioration of food. Overall the experience was satisfactory.
But then why a 4 star one may ask !
I think the place attracts a large crowd of tourists and locals alike because of its TripAdvisor fame.
I for a few moments felt a bit of rudeness in the behavior of the people who served us. But again, I can be wrong ! Different cultures, different experiences.
I am grateful that I was able to experience some genuine...
Read moreReading online reviews made my partner and I choose to dine here. I wish we hadn't. The service was very slow. We were seated outside, the waiter took dirty bowls away before allowing us to be seated and gave us our menus. Then we were left for about 20 minutes to be served. When our food came out it appeared to be okay. My partner enjoyed his lasagna but I had carbonara and it was horrible. It was honestly the worst pasta I've eaten ever! It tasted worse than macaroni cheese from a tin! It was rank. It smelt like sick. I tried it twice and it was horrible. I couldn't eat it. I got my partner to try it and he also said it didn't taste nice. A while after we had finished with our meal, a waitress came over and asked if I didn't like it, to which I replied no it was horrible. She seemed very annoyed by this and walked in. I then watched her show another customer (guessing someone she knew) that I hadn't eaten it, then he turned around and gave me a dirty look out of the window. We then waited about 10 minutes for a waitress to come back over, so in the end my partner just called out "can we have the bill please" then the waitress brought the bill over. She said that they'd made my meal half the price as I didn't like it, but she was very annoyed still about this. we paid and left. I definitely wouldn't recommend this place and would not return ever. Definitely the worst restaurant I've eaten at in Italy and and...
Read moreGlad we went out of our way to try this place--it's my favorite food we've had in Venice over 3 days. Most of the places we've eaten I haven't bothered to review, but Bacaro Quebrado was exactly what I was hoping to find. The atmosphere is very downscale chill rather than tourist kitsch. You'll know you are at the right place because there's a monkey logo on the window. Careful because there's a restaurant next door that has "Bacaro" branding as well, and they seem happy to let tourists mistake them for Bacaro Quebrado.
The drinks were a delight, the cicchetti fantastic (the meat stuffed olives are NOT to be missed) and the pasta and sauces... What dreams are made of. I went for the red pesto with smoked cheese, and my taste buds may never be satisfied again. Until we come back to Venice, at least. We all had different dishes, and shared bites all around, and everything we tasted was the best of the best we've ever had.
If you come here, you'll notice the place is likely packed, next to completely empty restaurants. You will almost certainly have to wait--potentially up to an hour depending on your timing. I don't think they do reservations. We certainly were tempted to just go to the empty restaurant next door, but I'm sure glad we didn't. This is one of those meals I'll carry with me the rest of my life, giving me the most compelling of reasons to return to a...
