Fish this fresh tastes and feels different. All the fish in the tanks look happy and healthy. It's like sitting in a traditional high-end Japanese restaurant with a front row seat to a busy fish market. The fish you order is scooped up minutes before it's presented and you can watch the preparation. The catching of the squid for the live squid sashimi (which is absolutely delicious) is a sight to see. The fish monger-looking guy comes out and expertly captures the squid in a clear container so you can usually see it squirt ink. After you eat the sashimi, the server will ask how you would like the animal to be dispatched...(fried, or cooked in some other way) we always liked to get the rest of it in sashimi form. The restaurant is always very busy and bustling. People are lined up before opening every day of the week, although there is never much of a wait because of the high turn over rate. Not impossible with a stroller but not recommended. Had to climb a few stairs and do some furniture moving to make it work. Once settled and seated (particularly in the tatami seats) it is not a bad place for kids. Not super quiet, very friendly staff. A family favorite for decades.

Walked in without reservations on an early Sun evening (5.30pm) and staff was happy to accommodate our meal (though i guessed this was due to pre-peak period of dinner service). What luck we had as 1) we were given excellent counter seats giving us full view of the live seafood tanks, and 2) seems they were on full house that night (as tables started filling up around 30min after we arrived). The only downside was the wait staff was explaining some pricing to us in Japanese on our choice of squid order, which we still didn't quite understand. However, partner was huge on ika and given this was more a pre-dinner meal than the main one, we just went ahead to order. What came was very fresh squid sashimi (ika), and we could also choose if we wanted the remainder of squid to be done as tempura, or karaage, or simply grilled or boiled. The squid tempuran was amongst some of the better ones thatnwe have tried. The whole dining environment is quite out of this world, though i must say the pricing is also quite the same. We paid about 7000yen for the squid done 3 ways (for 2 pax), so a note of caution to those going with non-Japanese language grasp.

Reserved this place a few weeks before my trip to kyushu and I definitely did not regret it. Despite the pricing, the service standards and food lived up to it. As they only accept reservations via phone calls, I had to ask my hotel reception to reserve a table for me. Upon reaching the restaurant, the staff (though had a language barrier with me as I can’t speak Japanese), immediately know that i reserved through my hotel reception and lead me in. The servers there tried their best to explain to me their recommendations despite the language barrier, and were attentive to our needs. As we had to remove our shoes and keep it in a drawer before sitting at our seats, they took our shoes out and laid it at the side when they knew that we were about to leave. Food wise, the sashimi were great! They even used the fish head to cook the miso soup after you have finished the sashimi. There were also some cooked food options for people that do not like to eat raw food. Maybe you can skip the fried octopus, as it was a little tough, but the chawanmushi was melt in the mouth! Definitely recommend.

We ordered the luxury kaiseki set just to taste the overall quality of the restaurant. All are good, but some are exceptional. It’s been almost three months since we visited, but I still remember vividly the simple looking bowl of clear broth with a fishball. The rich, yet subtle but complex layers of taste this liquid offered was mesmerising. And in the middle of it this soft, bouncy, light yet savoury non-fishy fishball. As a Hong Konger, I grew up with fishballs. All styles, tastes, mouthfeel and qualities. Yet this unassuming small snowy lump there was quite many levels up above all those I have had. As in any respectable kaiseki meals, many other dishes and bowls delivered their epicurean wonders in a humbly beautiful package. The service was what you expected of a good Japanese restaurant but the lady who served us was more friendly and eager to communicate with her limited English. She must be in her 60’s already so it surely gave a warm and cosy feel to this huge hall of a restaurant. I would most definitely return when I visit Fukuoka again.

One of the highly recommended live seafood restaurant in Fukuoka. A popular tourist destination. Firstly, if the toilet is clean, the restaurant is clean too. For Chikae, the toilets are very clean. Hence, I strongly believe the hygiene level must be good. There are English menu- a plus point for tourists. Not all staff know English. Thankfully, we had no issue with the ordering of the food. There was a few staff that understood English. The food was definitely fresh. The fish was still able to move after its flesh was sliced out for sashimi (it was a bit too much for me to bear….) There were also some movements from the squid when it had been turned into a sashimi platter. In short, you could not get any fresher seafood else where. Service was attentive and prompt. Excellent service. Overall experience was good. An unforgettable meal!

A place for special occasions, in my opinion. Well-lit, spacious, plus if you’re seated at the middle, you can see the cook catch live fish, which was interesting. The food was great, but eventually you get confused because it can get chaotic. You sometimes have several plates in front of you that you get confused as to which to eat first, and which are empty already. IDK why but even if the food was good, it wasn’t memorable. Something was lacking, which I can’t place. Don’t get me wrong - this was an authentic Japanese experience, and one tourists can appreciate, and should try at least once. Maybe I just appreciate more the sushi and sashimi aspect of Japanese cuisine, where the chef is in front of you, preparing your food. Btw we spent around 22,000yen for the kaiseki for 2 adults (plus 1 kiddie meal) - FYI.
