Wow. Do yourself a favour and stop here for a meal. Without a doubt, this is one of the best meals my girlfriend and I have eaten. We visited twice, getting the set menu both times. The salmon appetizer is phenomenal - I've had a lot of salmon like this before, and usually it tastes fishy, but this tasted like fresh salmon. The dressing balances everything well too. Hamburg steaks - both were very juicy! The regular one is in a deep demi glace sauce with a baked potato on the side (pro tip, mix the potato in with the demi glace at the end. "Japanese" style comes with a nice teriyaki like sauce to dop the hamburg steak in with a near perfectly cooked egg. Dessert - all of the desserts were out of this world. Our favourite is the mont blanc (in fact, we bought 2 from the take away counter to have as a midnight snack). Coffee - literally, this is one of the best coffees I have ever drunk. Read moreA restaurant inside the humongous Kyoto Train Station serving Japanized western food. We saw a lot of people ordering hamburger steak but we decided against it. Instead we got the omelet fried rice, scotch eggs, and prawn tempura.
They start you of with a tomato salad that is made of a whole tomato. It has a mayonaise dressing with tuna and I’m guessing some kind of tomato. It’s not bad actually, the tomato is cold and firm but juicy inside.
The omelet fried rice was very good and very heavy. Fried rice with shrimp, pork, chicken and squid bits topped with scrambled egg and some brown sauce. Its good but after a few bites you feel heavy already.
The scotch eggs were okay. Egg yolk was runny when I sliced it. But it’s a bit underseasoned.
I didn’t like the prawn tempura because the batter is too thick and its overcooked.
Worth a visit but don’t have the craving...
Read moreIf you're in Kyoto and want to eat hamburger steak, look no further. Touyoutei has been serving Western-style food in Kyoto since 1897. On the 7th floor of the Takashimaya department store, we arrived around 11:30 and had to wait around 20 minutes for a table of 3 - it's very popular, so be sure to come early if you have more than 2 people. The menu has a number of options, including Western-style or Japanese-style hamburger steak, as well as a popular cheese hamburger steak. I went with the Japanese-style A-lunch, which comes with tomato salad (must-try) along with rice or bread. There's also a B-lunch that adds a drink and dessert. The hamburger steak comes with a baked potato. All of the food was excellent. Highly...
