Nakau - Kyoto Hachijo Entrance — Restaurant in Kyoto

Very cheap and near the station, so it's pretty busy most of the time. I went past 10 and it was still crowded, but I still managed to find a seat immediately, especially since I'm a solo diner.

Food was good for the price, not something that I'd recommend to friends, but perfect if you need a quick meal and you're sick of konbini take out.

If it helps, you order and pay through the machine (English option available) where you can also use your IC card, take your receipt (2 pieces of paper), take a seat, and wait for your number to be called at the counter. I recommend translating what your queue number is in Japanese since I don't think they called mine in English. After eating you place your tray at the racks...

Good things: Inexpensive, open late, kiosk ordering system in multiple languages, came out fast. But, the place was dirty (even by American standards…) and I found the food to be REALLY lacking. Ordered a bowl with chicken, egg and truffle. Somehow it smelled so strongly, but was so bland. Also, I didn’t order the bowl with raw egg but it still had raw egg whites throughout the bowl (but no yolk?), and chicken that was both bland/dry and suspiciously pink at the same time. Udon with tempura bits had been sitting and tempura turned to mush when touched. Gave up after a few bites and went down the street to Yoshinoya, which was another inexpensive option, but was much nicer inside and the food was...

Maybe it was the 15hr journey to get here but we absolutely loved our food! It was after 10pm and everything in Kyoto station was closed or sold out so Nakau is a lifesaver!

Order food from ATM style machine. The screens have English option, and accept credit cards.

You can dine in or take out. We did take out: chicken and egg simmered on rice (oyakodon), pork katsu curry+salad, side order karaage chicken, karaage udon, so yummy. Even the salad with the sesame dressing was fresh and delicious. 3ppl, 2660 yen total.
