We visited the Yoshinoya at Kyoto Hachijo-guchi and ordered the unagi (eel) set meal — a decision we quickly came to regret. One of our family members ended up with a sharp bone lodged in her throat, requiring a hospital visit after we returned home.

We contacted Yoshinoya, and of course, we received the expected beautifully worded apology, complete with the usual talk about internal reviews, training, and how eel bones are “impossible to remove completely.” Very polite, very formal — and very useless in preventing real harm.

So here’s my actual advice for future customers: Do not order the unagi at Yoshinoya, especially if you’re dining with children or anyone not used to navigating tiny fish bones. It’s clearly not a dish they can serve safely. Go for the beef bowls instead — they’re safer and probably more in line with what...

Unbelievable bad service at the cashier, the female staff kept chatting with the customers in front me for 20 minutes, the customers couldn’t fulfill their orders because the restaurant doesn’t accept credit card, the customers decided to withdraw some cash. I thought it would be my turn finally since I’ve waited for 20 minutes. However, the staff didn’t want to help me, she asked me to wait until the customers in front me came back… this is insane… so I walked away and ate in a different restaurant. The staff should be trained better to know how to treat a customer, the store is not hers, she should not treated customers with her own preference, running the store in an efficient way is the key!!! I hope the owner can check my review and improve the...

You can count on Yoshinoya for a warm comforting meal of beef bowl! 🐄🐮 There’s even hotpot options available! 🍲 Beef is always soft and flavourful and goes so well with the egg, onion and rice 😋.

Loveee it that there’s different sizes of bowls available depending on your appetite, and that they provide a truckload of my favorite spring onions on the side!! 😋 It’s fast food style, and there’s free flow water available.

The staff that attended to us was kind and can speak English, which was a huge plus! It’s a short walk from Kyoto station and my accommodation....
