Friend took me to dinner here to celebrate my birthday. It is located down quaint side streets away from the hussle of touristy Asakusa, close to Kappabashi. Sat at the huge wooden counter and the master sushi chef made a selection of his choice nigiri, one by one. Started with a lightly grilled hotate (scallop) wrapped in nori (seaweed), and then several pieces of different fresh fish, including maguro, tai, uni, aji, and anago. Every piece was lovingly hand-shaped and delicious, with just the right amount of flavor; a tiny pinch of salt on the uni, and squeeze of lemon on the aji...after the meal he gave us some shinko (egg-plant pickles) and clear broth, and some final hand-rolls. The other patrons were locals, chatting up the husband and wife who run the place, and engaging us in light banter, with lots of smiles and laughs. Read moreWe stumbled upon this place after our initial plans fell through and they were very kind in accommodating our party of 5 tourists with no reservation after a brief 5 minute wait to prepare seating for us. We got to seat right at the counter with the chef preparing everything in front of us, talking us through what he was making, and generally being very hospitable and funny.
The food itself was amazing and some of the best sushi I've had and I got to see it all prepared right in front of me. Price-wise, I thought it was very reasonable at 5,500 yen for 12 pieces plus some small plates. Definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a nice, atmospheric sushi...
