Lunch Set 🐮🥩🍛 @akasaka_kintan
With my job, it's hard to stick to a regular schedule so I am super grateful that Kintan in Akasaka is open for lunch until 3pm (L.O. 14:30). 🙇🏻♂️
I first discovered this restaurant back in 2014, and it is still going strong 8 years later. There are now 19 Kintan restaurants in the Kanto area which each have a different focus such as shabu-shabu, steak, yakiniku or kappo cuisine. 🥩
This one has a upscale kappo theme, so it is sophisticated but has a friendly, warm atmosphere with friendly staff and chefs. There are also private rooms so it is suitable for entertaining clients, as well as for everyday casual use. 🍽
Weekday lunchtime is always crowded so I went later so as to avoid the rush. There is a wide range of options including a weekly menu, but I decided to choose the Special Late Lunch set, which is only available after 13:00. 🕐
This set has 3 main dishes: ■ Simmered beef, onion, tofu and poached egg, ■ Kintan beef curry ■ Homemade beef tongue hamburg with radish & spring onions. With this comes a delightful beef stock soup, salad & rice, all three of which you can get unlimited refills. 🉐
The simmered beef was sweet, the meat, onions & tofu melting in the mouth, egg adding a velvety coating. 🥚
The beef hamburg was cooked medium rare - made from tongue gave it a chewier texture with lots of natural juices, and grated radish giving an extra oomph. 😋
Saving the heaviest dish for last, the Kintan curry was rich with umami as it uses soup stock made from beef tongue and mix of 8 spices. Containing some generous chunks of soft succelent beef, this was an awesome way to finish the meal. 🥰
Being able to sample 3 different dishes ensures your palate stays stimulated and the different and flavours were all excellent paired together with the yummy white rice. 🍚

Read moreReserved a table via tabelog for their anniversary course, which did not disappoint; it was incredible in both quality and variety! The chawanmushi was creamy, rich and flavourful as an appetizer, and the beef tongue skewer was an incredible stand out star of the meal; rich, flavourful and juicy, and definitely a highlight of the meal. The beautifully marbled beef slices near the end were also rich, fatty and delicious, though as we already had so many dishes, I was lucky my wife was full and gave me her remaining pieces!
One of the really interesting dishes in the set menu was the liver; quickly searing the liver on a hot stone for 3-5 seconds each side, then eating it, had a very unique texture, almost like the meat had a “crunch” or “burst” like biting into a grape. For my wife, the texture was too much to associate with the meat, but I found it very interesting in a very good way, and I enjoyed the flavour. Probably the most unique dish on this particular set menu.
