Foreign travelers beware!
We reached the Asakusa area pretty late after landing and wanted to grab real food after our 13-hr flight. The first night at Sushi no wa was good, there was fast service and good sushi. The fish was fresh and rice stayed together on the nigiri.
We returned a few nights later and the experience could not have been more different. This time we ordered a couple of yakitori skewers and a few nigiri. The kitchen was extra slow cooking the yakitori and we had to ask the server for our final skewer. The nigiri still had good fish but the rice was falling apart as soon as they were picked up. Additionally we noticed our bill total continuing to climb unexpectedly. We asked about it and it turned out the restaurant had taken the liberty of adding a random "house special" order to our bill that totaled an extra 600 yen.
They removed it when requested, but the combination of a slow kitchen and random addition of costly bill items was off putting and made us not want to return.
If you do choose to dine here, watch your bill carefully as we noticed extra yen added to our bills. And also be warned that you may be seated next to boisterous drinking locals despite this place not being your usual...
Read moreWe had been dining here for several days and at first enjoyed the food and service. It felt fair, and despite the language barrier, we never felt taken advantage of, until our last visit.
This time, a pushy server tried to charge us for an Otoshi (a small appetizer/cover charge) that we had never received, never requested, and had never been charged for on previous visits. When we questioned it, another server apologized and assured us the charge would be removed, so we continued our meal. Yet when the bill came, the Otoshi was still included.
We paid and walked out, not because of the small charge, but because of the dishonesty. As tourists and non-Japanese speakers, it felt like we were being taken advantage of, which was disappointing after several good experiences here.
A warning to other travelers: this is a questionable place to feel comfortable. Dining here can be hit or miss, and whether you’re treated fairly seems to depend on the server. Unfortunately, they’ve lost our trust and...
