My ex-girlfriend said: "Today I ate Okonomiyaki near Tokyo station. Okonomiyaki and Monjayaki are similar dishes. I recommend Okonomiyaki. It is delicious than Monjayaki"
Since men & women don't usually agree on Everything. I have to give Monjayaki a try before I have Okonomiyaki.
Since most ladies like to watch their waist line. I had assumed Monjayaki would have more carbs than Okonomiyaki. I was wrong.
I ordered the Monjayaki with pork belly & green onion & a fancy beer (can't remember the exact name)
My server was nice, I even got to admire her Monjayaki cooking skills. Quite frankly, this experience was as nice as drinking my spike extremely sweet alcohol beverage at the maid cafe the first night I was in tokyo.
The special beer that I ordered came with a mug with a giant chuck of ice. Distracted by the server rad karate Monjayaki skill, I thought the large iceberg had melted. The mug actually vodka or sake in the mug, I almost choked n spat out what I thought was melted water. Mixing the beer with the alcohol reminds me of the sake bomb in America. (And of course, only a country like America can cum up with this name.)
My server even recommended me which condiment to use. It's quite lovely honestly. Many Japanese I met this trip don't dare to recommend in fear of losing respect points if they fail to satisfy me. (For real, my half Japanese hostel worker told me).
I don't like the dried green onion flakes, but since I need spice in my life, I need more burning sensation to water my mouth.
My server also suggested to wait for 3 mins at like the Monjayaki to simmer and cook more prior to eating. I actually prefer to wait longer cause I like the crispy bits most.
Overall, I had fantastic lunch alone. Next time I revisit Japan, I definitely plan to bring my mom here to chow with me along with several of my favourite...
Read moreMy brother and I came here last night (Monday around 9pm). It was busy, but the wait time wasn't long for us. There's a queuing area with a line of chairs to the right side of the restaurant, and a staff member came by to let us view the menus when we were close to being seated. They have English menus available, and after you're taken to your table, you can put your bags and jackets in the compartment under the seats. (Definitely do this or your stuff will smell like food.) We ended up ordering a monjayaki, yakisoba, an okonomiyaki, and some drinks. We were able to finish all our food between the two of us, but I was extremely stuffed. The restaurant closed at 11pm: last order for food was 10pm, and last order for drinks was 10:30pm. You would need to go to the cashier at the front of the restaurant to pay the bill that the staff leaves at your table.
Rinka, our server, was awesome and very friendly. She could speak/understand most of our English and our attempts of basic Japanese. We are also very grateful that she helped cook our food for us since it was our first time having monjayaki and okonomiyaki tableside. There was another staff member who also assisted with cooking our last item, and although she didn't speak English, she was super nice and made sure we were taken care of. As a tourist, I was a little anxious since our Japanese is not great and never had or made monjayaki/okonomiyaki before, but all the staff here was super kind and helpful. They even checked in with us to confirm if we needed anything else during the last calls for food/drinks. We had such a great time, and the food was delicious. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone who wants to try monjayaki or okonomiyaki for the first time! Thank you for the wonderful food...
Read moreHow the hell did this place get 4.7 overall score is beyond me. Upon reading all the Japanese comments I come to find out that there seems to be a lot of discontent with this store that is not reflected by the score. And also distrust with the 5 star reviews left by some of the “customers”.
We came here on a weeknight at 9:30pm Tuesday. So they were busy but not overwhelmed. I ordered the two monjayaki that are recommended on the menu. The squid ink one tasted so salty it’s inedible. The mentaiko was edible but not something I ever want to taste ever again. After the bad food and terrible service, we decided to cancel the rest of our orders.
All the staff were young kids. I wouldn’t say most of them have an attitude but one of the male was so rude to us. When I asked the female staff why it’s so salty it’s inedible she couldn’t answer me but did nothing to resolve it. We asked the staff to cook the second monja, they just kept up waiting so long and they stood there chatting… so we cooked it ourselves. Their premise and they wrote it outside on a sign is that they cook these for you… but watching us cook the second one, the available staff just stood there 3 of them and did not offer to cook.
Overall, one of the worst my worst dining experiences in Japan after living here for 8 years and traveled to almost every corner of Japan that is inhabited.
One saving grace, the guy at the cash register heard that we asked why it’s so incredibly salty, he tried to explain to us…りょうさん、ありがとうございます Nevertheless, it wasn’t an acceptable explanation for the food and poor customer service. I highly recommend you eat at much mediocre place in the vicinity than to...
