I have not been to the Shinjuku branch and it seems they are pretty quiet which is great because you get to have 1-1 interactions with the Chef if you like or just admire your lunch being fried right in front of you. I had it at a leisurely pace and the Chef anticipates that and fries it in accordance to the speed you chomp off your food. I loved every piece of the tempura, fish to vegetable to prawns. They say they use sesame oil so that the mild flavour of the oil brings out the taste of the tempura. The batter is very light and the coat on each of them is just a sliver thick making an amazing crunch and at the same time allowing you to enjoy the creamy texture of the meat/vegetable inside. I went for the lunch set which is in the affordable range all within ¥3000. I would prefer to come here for lunch if possible since the dinner sets are more than twice the price.
For those who have difficulty finding the place, it is sited on the 8th level! I was walking around the ground floor and basement wondering where the famed...
Read moreMy go-to for decently good tempura for many years after a friend’s recommendation — at least to their original restaurant in Shinjuku. Since we were putting up in Ginza this time, we tried this branch. Overall, standards have been maintained. But I thought I tasted excess oil in my first piece, which was the prawn legs. Hmmm… anyway, the rest that followed tasted good. Batter was light and crispy. They used to have a small whole fish articulated with extended fins to make it seem like it was flying/dancing — but not anymore, at least not in our sets (we ordered two different sets). Option of various salts were provided besides tentsuyu. Rice was refillable; and I had 3 bowls. That should tell you how well it whetted my appetite (or how hungry I was). Courses were timed perfectly, and service attentive. Left satisfied — and there was no belching of excessive oil afterwards. One trick for oily food is to drink tea...
Read moreTempura have always been a thing of fried shrimp and a variety of vegetable in the states, but at Tempura Shinjuku Tsunahachi, they uses different seafoods, seasonal vegetables, and the meal is combined with other side dishes and soups. 8 or 10 pieces of tempura might not sound like a lot at first, but it can get you pretty full at the end. All the ingredients are fresh, fried to perfection, and they use sesame oil to fried their tempura. I'm very happy to had this on both of my visits to japan, i will leave happy and sad. Sad because there's nothing in the states that come close to this, at least I haven't found it yet. For the price you're getting something fresh, delicious, and healthy all at once. You won't have an oily mouth after the meal. I really like the tiger prawn, the clam, shrimp kakiage, the white fish, and the leek. Highly recommend the leek, it was a...
