Everything coffee here starts with triple ristrettos from Streamer Latte Art Blend beans. This makes it a really good value for coffee compared to other coffee places in Tokyo and Starbucks (a few steps away).
This is a tiny shop but it's got a great cosy feel. Kiyoshi San used to work for Streamer and he does a nice mug size cup of coffee. It's really comfort in a cup. He is really humble and nice, he speaks a little English and he has a great memory. He actually remembered me from my last visit more than a year ago. I arrived right before opening time after the Tsukiji tuna auction. First customer and he had to unlock the door for me although he was inside already and ready. When I walked in, his face lit up and I started to say.."You probably don't remember me...". Imagine my surprise when he immediately said "Yes, from Singapore!".
I also tried their hot apple cider. Total win for me (just missing shot of rum haha). They steam the apple juice with cinnamon and serve it in a small mason jar mug. Come on, it's a mason jar, instantly the feel good factor has gone up. Sweet, thick and just the right amount of spice, this tasted great on a cold day.
Love the fact that the main seating is on an actual turret. If you've been to Tsukiji, you will see tons of these zipping around carrying fish and whatnot. He also has a few random stools at the back and a counter with bar stools and charging points. A small space but he managed 3 little sections in it.
I bought a packet of beans to take home at 1500 yen for 250g.
He's got his own bathroom which is really clean and...
Read moreJust slightly off a main street sits a laid back coffee bar that serves espresso with a punch. A few seats, a couple signature coffee options, dorayaki and more. This self proclaimed "most outrageous coffee shop in Japan" can be your pregame or after for your epic Tsukigi excursion. And if you ask me, you should start with a dose of magic.
Turning in from the noisy street, you immediately see a gigantic monstera in front of the shop. The shop may not seem large, but it's packed with characters. It has an off beat industrial aesthetic.
The espresso is served with a ring of dark color crema. The crema is incredibly thick. it is, for sure, a more developed profile, but it's not your regular old school italiano. The first sip is intense with a lot of caramel, dark chocolate characters, but then it progresses to a much more balanced and sweet finish that lingers.
The seasonal spiced mocha latte has the most perfect ratio of warming spices, chocolate, espresso and milk. Not overly sweet and has absolutely no hint of bitterness.
Can't stop at their Tokyo store? Apparently they have other stores based in New York and...
Read moreA local place that's overshadowed by Starbucks just off the main street. I was here 3 years previously and the latte quality has definitely improved. That said, there's nothing to eat to compliment the coffee. My friend brought a sandwich from another place over to compliment our drink and we were about to enjoy a bit of the atmosphere on the very narrow patio/ sidewalk, when the owner came over and kicked us out. We were sitting outside, trying to not be too obvious and we were paying patrons having just purchased two lattes. It's one thing if we just sat on the patio without being a customer, it's another if we're customers and get kicked off for bringing a sandwich from an outside place to enjoy WITH the coffee we just purchased. Perhaps this is just a cultural difference, but I think the owner should allow for SOME leeway for paying customers. If his business is just lattes then let people bring a snack over as a compliment so long as they are discrete. Again, latte quality was good, to be fair, but due to the rude service, I won't be returning to buy...
