This cafe was a pleasant surprise. Reached slightly before 8am and was a bit hesitant to enter because the char kuey teow stall didn't look open. A young and friendly female employee assured us that there was CKT and that we could order the chee cheong fun from the cart outside to eat inside the cafe.
We were seated quickly and the young lady gave us a menu to look at. We ordered but it took the CKT uncle a while to finally come out from the back of the cafe and get cooking. I think we waited at least 15-20mins but it was worth the wait. The CKT had great wok hei, three prawns, visible egg pieces, no cockles, and not that salty. LOVED IT! Looked just like the pics I saw on the reviews here.
If you are wondering how it tastes if you takeaway and reheat later in the day, it tastes pretty much the same as if you had it on the spot. Previous CKTs I've had don't taste as good when you reheat it after a few hours (noodle breaks up and becomes a mess, becomes greasy).
Also tried the special pork pao - it was basically a char siew pao. It was good, the filling was flavorful and the ratio of meat to pao was just right for us.
Saw a few people (looked like regulars) order the omelet and it did look pretty good. We'll give it a try the next time we are here.
The air suam (warm water) was actually suam not lukewarm or steaming hot, and the glass was cleaner than a lot of kopitiams in KL.
Overall the cafe was clean and quiet on a weekday morning. Service was good, the young lady was patient and friendly even though she was bustling around taking care of...
Read moreWe stopped by a local kopitiam for breakfast and tried several of their popular dishes. The char koay teow was quite enjoyable, flavorful enough and served with the right wok hei, while the chee cheong fun also turned out not bad with a decent sauce. The roti bakar, however, was just average — nothing too special compared to other places. One of the main attractions here is the char koay kak, and although the stall drew a long queue even early in the morning, the taste was only so-so and did not quite live up to the hype.
The atmosphere was bustling and very typical of a busy kopitiam, but finding a table was a challenge, especially since the place was already packed by 8 a.m. Parking was also not easy, so be prepared to circle around a bit before getting a spot. Overall, it’s a good place if you want to sample a mix of classic local breakfast dishes, but expect some waiting time and average hits and misses in terms of...
Read moreBreakfast @ Café Seow Fong Lye. . The lady boss owner of Café Seow Fong Lye, Madam Lee Lai Foong runs a pushcart selling Chee Cheong Fun (MYR RM2.80) just outside the shop, where she still personally cooks and serves to this day. . Her rendition looks messy and unassuming, but has bouncy silky smooth rice noodle rolls with faint grainy sweet flavour. . What makes it fantastic is the generous lashings of thick fermented shrimp paste, sweet hoisin sauce, chili paste, and sesame oil, giving this a robust and punchy savoury shrimpy sweet spicy nutty flavour. . Completely yummy, I agree with those who claim it's among the best versions of chee cheong fun on Penang island. . I find their Coffee (MYR RM1.60) to be a good perk-me-up in the mornings, fragrant and toasty sweet with a...
