Going to Penang Island doesn’t mean you have to stick to trying fried kuey teow, Hokkien mee, laksa, or cendol. You can explore unique cuisines beyond the usual Penang street food. One such option is The Boomers, a Hainanese Western cuisine restaurant, which might suit your appetite when you’ve had enough of traditional Penang street food. My family and I ordered the Hainanese Chicken Chop, Classic Pot Pie, and Pasta (Pomodoro Mozzarella Cheese). The pasta came with an Italian tomato sauce and fresh mushrooms. While it wasn’t particularly surprising, the pasta was well-cooked. However, I found the sauce a little too sweet for my taste, which made it hard for me to enjoy other dishes afterward. As for the Hainanese-style Chicken Chop, the oriental sauce was well-prepared and paired nicely with the fried chicken. The chicken had a subtle buttery fragrance—I’m not sure if they used butter to cook it or if the pot pie influenced my taste buds. The sauce was sweet-based, but the balance of sweetness and slight sourness was perfect, complementing the crispy chicken skin. The meat was juicy and never overcooked, which made it enjoyable. The Classic Pot Pie had two surprising points. First, the thickness of the pie crust was just right, with a rich buttery taste. Second, the filling inside the pie was unexpected. Initially, I thought it would be a typical Western chicken stew filled with potatoes and carrots, but instead, it tasted like a very thick mushroom soup with plenty of green beans and corn. It reminded me of a possible traditional British recipe. Overall, the pot pie stood out because of its buttery crust and generous portion size, which could make you feel full or even overindulgent. In my opinion, if they added Hainanese-style stewed mutton together with the chicken, it might help the flavor remain interesting and less monotonous as you eat. That said, the pot pie and chicken chop truly showcased authentic Hainanese flavors and left a positive impression.

The chicken chop is HUGE. Seller should have given remark: “Recommended for 2 pax” 😂 Because me and my colleagues, total of 5 people, we ordered 5 plates of the chicken chop and the waiter taking our order was shocked at first but he didn’t stop us, which was quite hilarious, we added one more truffle fries for sharing so it was literally a hearty dinner. When the chicken chop was served, we regretted our decision…😂 The chicken chop was not bad, it is very flavorful. The price is very reasonable too. But would I come back for it? Uh-huh, maybe not😂 (might come back for other menu) I feel quite sick in the end cause it was too much and too flavorful… might need something refreshing to cleanse the palate. The truffle fries is good but you can only taste the truffle if you eat with the black paste (in the picture) else it’s just a regular fries, still it’s the kind of fries that I like, long, thick and with skin 👍🏻 Nevertheless me and my colleagues have a happy meal here and we managed to finish all our food despite huge portion (we were all very stuffed😂). The waiters and the owners are very friendly, we sat at the shop and chatted for some time but they didn’t chase us out even though they were almost closing their shop.

**Update: Revisited a few more times, with the last visit on 11/1/25. The quality of the chicken chop has drastically dropped—it is no longer crispy, and the sauce consistency varies; sometimes it’s thick and overly salty. During the last visit, the waiter was polite and cordial. However, on previous occasions, I encountered a rude lady with a nonchalant attitude. On one visit, we were rudely rushed out during closing time—they simply handed us the receipt and expected immediate payment, which came across as insincere and downright rude!! Things could have been handled better. A simple courtesy, such as informing guests that the restaurant is closing, would have been appreciated, rather than displaying a “black face.” If you’re so unhappy with your work, better to resign, such attitude problem will only ruin the business, to the owner please take note, your food quality and service is deteriorating, this is my 4th visit, and I don’t appreciate what’s happening to your wonderful restaurant
