Being a Michelin recommended place, I had to come try it. To me it's ok but nothing to bowl me over. If you come early, they only have KTT but you can order from the next door kopitiam if you want some variety. As far as the shop is concerned, they do have some kuih but those are only sold after 9am.
As far as the KT is concerned, they have 2 versions as expected, dry and soupy. I found their soup light. Probably fits those who like light delicate flavours but unfortunately not for me. I prefer a bit more body and zing to the soup which this was lacking. They are, however generous with their kt. And you will end up quite full from it. Even the dry version wasn't really spectacular. The soy taste combo was pretty average IMHO and didn't stand out much. Fortunately the fish ball was yummy. It's a bit different from other locations as it's quite soft, doesn't have the elastic springy consistency you normally find with other places, and because of that, I found it delicious. As also, with most KTT places, you can add on intestines, liver, chicken feet to bulk up your meal.
As for the shop, it's clean, it's inviting and comfortable to dine at. And if you come during holidays and early enough, parking at the road side is quite...
Read moreFound hidden behind bamboo blinds and potted garden at the junction with Amoy Lane is this busy breakfast corner. A mug of mean kopi (RM1.60) is served here to wake you up from last night's drift. The quarrelsome Hokkien couple up front cooks your morning Koay Teow Thng with a Singapore style menu. A basic bowl (RM5) comes with five petite soft and salty fishballs, handmade by factory hands with little fish paste in the Penang tradition of eel ball making, much of it just flour. A few strands of chicken and a token lettuce tops off this clear broth of chicken and pork scrags. The latter is a delicacy being gnawed upon by a visiting octagenarian hungry for his lost childhood memories growing up in Singapore's ghetto, but at an additional price. So comfortably, Pay as you Go here. Add on 3 pieces of pork intestines for RM1.00. A better bowl is found at Lebuh Melayu in...
Read moreI've been eating at this location since I was a child. I always visit when I come back to Penang. I visited in 2023 and found the food to still be similar to the old days. I tried it again in 2024 after it received a Michelin select and it was no longer the same. I used to love the abundance of garlic oil. I find like many other Kway Teow Tng places, shrinkflation has meant the soup is more diluted, taste is blander. I guess to keep prices low for Penang, they decided to cut back on ingredients rather than raise prices. After over 30 years of eating here, it is time to try...
