Once Upon A Time - Staycation at City Centre Part V
Knowing that the kids were not enthusiastic to join us for an early morning excursion, we decided to wake up earlier before they did. Our target? The famous sang yue porridge of Petaling Street - Hon Kee Porridge which was helmed by the 3rd generation. For the uninitiated, they have been in operation since 1949... That's even before my father was born!!!
Our strategy was to wake up as early as possible but when we arrived there, it was already packed. I had to walk further into the covered area on the left side of the stall, which was quite hot & stuffy by the way, and spotted a table there. The sight of worker stirring the porridge continuously whetted my appetite instantaneously.
◾Sang yue porridge - we ordered not only one but 5 bowls for each of us. Gotta love the silky smooth bowl of porridge drizzled with sesame oil with a plate of thinly sliced sang yue served separately. The fish was cooked upon dunking into the porridge for a while. I must say that this might be the best sang yue porridge in town if not Malaysia. ◾Extra bowl of fried intestines - just because fried intestines went well with porridge & I wanted a crunchy bite. Must order! ◾chee cheong fun - they allow ordering ccf from next door stall. The youngest daughter couldn't get enough of the sweet sauce.
It was more like a nostalgic visit for the missus who used to eat the porridge during her ATC...

A good and hearty bowl of porridge which comfort my soul especially for the fresh raw fish (which you pour into your hot porridge to 'cook' it) and fried pork innards which prepared without the use of MSG. Do take note that even you add on fresh raw fish plater alone, it still costs RM11 even without the plain porridge.
For the secret recipt sauce rice noodles aka chee cheong fun, it is more towards sweet side, 75% sweetness, 20% saltiness, 5% spicyness for the rough ratio xD it is quite smooth and silky for the rice noodles. Sauce definitely can feel is homemade which different from the usual standard taste out there.
They do accept TNG here as payment method and they do open every day (in google review mentioned it is closed on Wednesday which is not true i guess) and only close during the first day of CNY celebration as per their clarification.

Read moreMore than one year ago, first time I was here I ordered the plain porridge with the raw fish slice. Porridge is smooth and hot enough for the fish slices to be cooked when you add them in. The raw fish is very fresh with lots of ginger and spring onion and no fishy smell at all (love that 😂). It costs me only 6rm. In some other times I tried almost dishes on the menu, and found that Tongue and Intestine Porridge + Crispy innards + Yau Char Kwai is my favourite combo all the time! Made me less craving for "cháo lòng". It costs me 8rm. You may add on Century egg or Salted egg also.
At the beginning, it made me confused cause there are 2 different stalls next to each other, both serve porridge and Chee Cheong Fun. One called Hon Kee since 1949 with banner "Beware of imitation", while the other called Yi Kee since 1943 (can't find on GG map), in my opinion, it looks more authentic with friendly 老闆 lao5 baan2 😂🤣
I have eaten at both stalls, and of course I prefer the 1943 to the 1949. Photos I posted also from Yi Kee 1943.
Can give it a try when you happen to be at...
