We were taken to Pik Wah 碧华楼 for dinner. I like the old school feel. The food was tasty but if you come dine in this kind of restaurant, prepare to accept subpar service. However, I was surprised most staff were actually quite attentive. 😀
For their food, I have mixed feelings, but it might be perfect for those who likes their food cooked with huge amount of sugar and honey but not for me.
The standout dishes for me were:
绍兴酒龙趸鱼头汤 Fried Grouper Fish Head Soup with Chinese Wine 瓦煲绍兴酒焖鸡 Braised Chicken with Shao Xing Wine in Claypot
Both dishes were very delicious and I can wholeheartedly recommend them. However if you have too much of the fish head soup it starts to get a bit heavy and bloated. A small amount is just great.
I have very mixed feelings about their “signature” dishes as it seemed their signature is to load lots of honey into the dish. For example:
招牌蜜汁脆皮叉烧 Signature Crispy Char Siu with BBQ Sauce
I love how perfectly the char siu was cooked and melt in your mouth without a fatty feel. But their sauce was way too sweet - too much honey!
招牌芭提雅鳕鱼 Deep Fried Cod Fish in Pattaya Style (Sweet & Sour Sauce) the real Thai version has a perfect balance of sweet and sour. I couldn’t taste any sourness in Pik Wah’s version but the fish was drenched in sugary honey sauce! I loved how light, tasty and the perfectly deep fried cod was as it also melt in your mouth but I hated the overly sweet lemon sauce without the tanginess of lemon. Way way way too sweet! It ruined the enjoyment of the cod for me!
招牌黑酱大生虾 Stir Fried River Lobster in Black Sauce
While I enjoyed the dark caramelised soy sauce and it’s slightly less sweet compared with the two dishes mentioned above. I am pretty sure some honey were also added to enhance the sweetness. I enjoyed the slight bitterness from the dark soy sauce but the dish was still overly sweet for me and the river lobster were overcooked and rubbery.
咸蛋炸苏东 Deep Fried Squid with Salted Egg Yolk was tasty and crunchy, great if you like salted egg yolk but I would prefer salt and pepper style.
龙井金黄豆腐 Long Jing Tea Tofu in Pumpkin Sauce 蒜米炒芥兰 Stir-fried Kai Lan with garlic
Both dishes were actually very tasty and I enjoyed them. I didn’t like the texture and flavour of their homemade tofu but the pumpkin sauce was quite nice, but the dish needed more saltiness as the tofu tasted really bland and the pumpkin sauce too subtle to add any flavour to the tofu. The sauce tasted really...
Read moreWe came to dine because of the Michelin Guide recommendation. What an utter disappointment.
We wanted to book a table and called the phone number listed on Google but it could never get connected. In the end, we decided to just walk-in for our dinner.
Their address on Grab Car app has not changed. The Grab driver brought us to the old address at MABA Stadium. We (5 adults and 3 kids) had to walk from MABA Stadium to the Chin Woo Stadium. When I shared this with the cashier, she said I should have typed "Chin Woo". And when I said we are not locals and this is our first visit to the restaurant, how would we know that we "should have" typed "Chin Woo"? She replied, "next time you know." Rude staff. Well, there won't be a "next time".
The captain who took our order and the cashier only spoke Cantonese! When I asked the captain if she could speak in Mandarin, she continued to reply in Cantonese! Her tone was derogatory when taking our order and sounded disbelieved when we told her that we wanted all the dishes in small portion. Rude staff. With the cashier, when I spoke with her in English language, she continued to reply me in Cantonese with a loud voice! Do the staff here only speak Cantonese?! Poor service.
We ordered steamed fish, roast chicken, chasiew, bak-choy yam soup, lily bulb combo, rice, pot of tea, coke and green apple juice. We had to remind the service staff a few times to bring us the apple juice that we ordered together with other dishes. Our noodle came much later after we almost finished eating the other food. Mind you, there were only a few tables occupied with diners. Slow service.
Typical Chinese restaurant grade food, except for crispy chasiew which was really good.
For the poor service and typical Chinese restaurant grade food, it's not worth paying the price we paid. This would be our FIRST and LAST time eating there. Wonder how it got listed on the Michelin Guide...
Read moreHonestly we were looking to try because of the hype of the Michelin guide. Went there on a Saturday night with our reservation at 6.30pm, and they have relocated to chin woo stadium, which is not stated on google or waze, and that’s fine.
The problem comes when we arrived at the place, it has a limited parking space so we had no choice but to do valet parking, which cost a staggering amount of RM20! The valet carpark at some major malls cost that, and some are even for the whole day. This one is just for a dinner and it’s already that amount.
Furthermore, having tried many different Chinese restaurants from oriental group, grand imperial group, the food was frankly a huge letdown. Everything was normal but comes at a hefty price. We ordered 2 patin fish, 2 yam basket, 2 char siew, 2 Kailan, 2 naipak, and 2 butter prawn ball. Each Patin cost 195, and it was slightly over cooked. Other dishes as they sound, just tasted normal. Everything cost approximately 1400. Might as well go to some old school dai chao for the quality.
And to make things worse, the valet actually scratched one of our cars. We found out this morning when it’s bright. How can this be accepted? We paid so much for the food, and are still required to pay for parking, not to mention it’s RM20!!! At a mere small stadium, not a mall!
Food is meh. Honestly not bad but not great. However we had a very bad experience there. Decided to write a review because it was...
