I quite enjoyed the two times that I have visited Bebek Goreng Pak Ndut, an Indonesian restaurant chain at Sunway Pyramid that specialises in crispy duck. On my second visit, my mother had their signature crispy duck while I decided to try the Sangan crispy duck. I like the Sangan version even more with its smokey flavour and it's more savoury taste due to it being marinated for 24 hours. Although not every part of the skin is crispy, I did enjoy the flavours of fish. The colour can be fiery and there are 3 types to choose from. Just be careful as my joy was cut short by a few minutes after dipping into the chili for far too many times. My tongue was in pain got that duration of time.
As for the Sup Buntut, I got a couple of tender oxtail pieces in a soup that was rich in spices but a bit salty. So it was better eaten with a scoop of rice and a spoonful of soup.
It may not be as good as the famous Bali crispy duck but it is much cheaper and it does the job when you missed it. I would choose Pak Ndut over the other more pricey one from TRX (its name escapes me) for its price and it also...
Read moreI am rating this place based on my second time trying their nasi bebek. The first time tasting their crispy nasi bebek was an impressive experience and I am keen to see if that consistency applies to other dishes. I chose to try the nasi bebek sangan and added a bowl of sup buntot. Comparing the bebek sangan with the original crispy bebek, the smoky aroma and flavors took the centre stage. The bebek was lightly crispy and nothing shirt of flavorful but the meat was quite dry. I recalled the original bebek crispy had a more juicy and moist meat. The tempe and tahu were ordinary and so were the lalapan. The sambal however remained a highlight that paired very nicely with your bebek and rice. The oil rich sambal with intense combination of spicy chillies and msg delivered that addictive punch that is synonymous with the sambal accompanying nasi bebek goreng. The sup buntot was decent and I enjoyed the tender ox tail parts. While the bebek sangan didn't quite meet my expectations in this repeated visit, I don't mind coming back for the original...
Read moreWas pretty excited to find bebek goreng here as I've tried the dish in Bali and was really impressed. HOWEVER, this shop's was downright disappointing.
We should've taken the empty shop as a warning sign to turn around and walk away, but we were too attracted by the prospect of bebek goreng that we decided to give it a try anyway.
We ordered the original and shredded crispy fried ducks. The meat was dry and the side vege came straight out of the fridge still cold. The shredded duck literally feels like you're eating keropok for dinner, it doesn't leave you feeling full at all.
Staff service was a new level of low. Young guy at the front barely said a word to us, mostly just stared at us quietly. Not even a welcome or thank you. He looked like a gen Z who was only there because his parents forced him to earn some pocket money.
What a waste for a potentially good concept of...
