YOUR FRIENDS NOT WELCOME, and YOUR TIMES UP.
I really would like to give this restaurant a better review. The girlfriend and I visit Cabo regularly. We found El Peregrino looking through trip adviser for great restaurants in the city. We visited and had a wonderful time, the FIRST time. We met the owners son and he took excellent care of us. The wait staff was friendly and the food was great.
Which is why I need to write this review. We decided to go have dinner at El Peregrino this trip. I made reservations knowing that the restaurant is small and has just a few tables. We set a reservation for 6 PM. We summoned our Uber early enough to make the restaurant in time. And yes Uber is available in Cabo, even though some resorts, and people will tell you it is not, or it is not legal. Don’t believe the hype just some of your Uber, it is safe. But Uber is limited in drivers. Sometimes Uber takes a little bit longer to get to you, or traffic takes longer to get to the restaurant. I made sure to let The hostess know we are running late. We arrived at the restaurant at 6:15 PM and sat down at our table. To which the hostess let us know that our table is booked again at 8:30 PM. And that we would need to be done with our meal by then. Personally I took this as a very rude way to inform customers. We sat down and our waiter was awesome at first, we ordered a margarita and some appetizers to which were wonderful as usual the food is great. We were in the process of booking an excursion for the next day. And our guy who was booking it for us was to meet us at the restaurant. So that we can pay our deposit. We really like our guy who books our trips excursions. So my girlfriend invited him to sit down with us for a minute. We ask if he’d like a margarita and he did except. But we noticed something for kill year after Danny sat down at our table. Suddenly our waiter was nowhere to be found, and everybody stayed away from our table. Almost as if they did not approve of a local who sells excursions coming in and doing a deal at our table, or someone they don’t think is worthy of their restaurant sitting at our table. Last time I checked the customer can have anyone sit at their table no matter if the person is homeless, or the president of the country.
Anyway back to what happened. We finished dinner, Danny and I had another couple of margaritas. And remember we haven’t seen our waiter in probably 25 minutes. At that point the hostess came to our table and asked us if we wanted anything else. My girlfriend told her we hadn’t seen our waiter in 25 minutes, to which she replied he’s busy with another table and that’s why am asking you if you want dessert. We said that’s no reason for not seeing him for 25 minutes she goes I’m asking you if you want anything else because I held your table for 30 minutes. As if she had done us a favor. Last time I checked it’s travelers, visitors, and customers that bring money into Cabo‘s economy. Not a very good way to treat repeat customers who had a great impression of your restaurant. Overall she talk down to us, treated us as they were doing us a favor, and then treated us worse once a friend of ours sat down at our table.
The long and short of it. El Peregrino Is a good restaurant, very popular with the locals. The food again is wonderful, but depending on their mood, and how their staff perceives your actions you may get crummy service and rude interaction. We will not be back to this restaurant ever again, and I will not refer, Ed will make sure that anyone going knows that your mileage may...
Read moreEl mejor de los cabos! My wife and I visited Cabo San Lucas to celebrate her 40th b'day. The local guy who shuttled us from the airport to our hotel spoke highly of the queso fundido and ribs at El Peregrino. I am so happy that we took his advice and chose El Peregrino for dinner on the evening of her birthday. The restaurant is small, and this was early September, the slower season, just after a hurricane. Staff were waiting to seat and serve us as soon as we walked in. The place is indoors, air conditioned, and had ceiling fans that kept us comfortable. The music playlist was a shift from the party vibes and dance beats that fill the nearby marina, and it felt custom selected for us and our occasion (The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Cat Stevens). Our server was a charming young man with short dark hair and a beard whose name I wish I could remember... 😞. We ordered a bit of everything. The Queso Fundido was the best I have ever tried. The chorizo was not the average greasy and oversalted sausage. The cheese blend was tasty, just the right balance of oil and creaminess when topped with the locally sourced meat. This queso and the fresh tortillas definitely had that "just one more" magic. For seconds, we shared the Greek salad and the bay scallop bisque. The greens were fresh, the vinigarette was fruity and perfect for the chard and arugula. And bisque was better than I've had anywhere from New York to New Orlesans to San Fran. It was a lightly creamed broth with fresh tidbits of scallops and sweet hints of onion, the perfect pallet prep! Our server recommended the Cadillac margarita to my wife who is not a big fan of margaritas. He was dead right. She loved it, and was smiling and making plans for a second as soon as she tasted it. I had the Sea Bass with mushroom risotto. The chef impressed me with a perfectly cooked and rested piece of sea bass. And the risotto and velvety garlic sauce made me want to shake his hand and fly him back home with us. If you like fish, and you're picky about how it's served, you want to try this sea bass. No wonder it's the most popular dish on the menu. My wife is not a fish lover, and this one even won her over. My birthday girl got the recommended slow-smoked and charcoal finished ribs. They were beautifully plated and finished with a southern style sauce that rivaled anything I had growing up in the south. My wife was charmed when the staff sang her a very romantic birthday song and brought us a lush flan with a birthday messge written in berry and chocolate sauces that were the perfect soft compliment for the creamy custard.
She was warmed by the food, and glowed over the Cadillac margarita. She was treated like royalty with a quiet classy charm from the beautiful staff. So, my wife got the best birthday dinner ever. And after a busy day in the disco vibes of the marina getting offered tequila shots and timeshares and more tequila, we left El Peregrino feeling enriched and in love with the people of Cabo who know how to live well and love sharing the good life and good vibes with visitors. Thanks...
Read moreOne of the hidden gems in downtown Cabo. First, make sure you make a reservation. Space is limited and the spots get filled up quick. I have been able on two different occasions show up as a walk-in, but I had to wait a few minutes before I could get seated. The place tends to be crowded.
For drinks, definitely try the passion fruit mezcal. It was delicious in one of the best in Cabo. For wines, I tend to drink Mexican wines because being in Mexico. Both the Pinot Noir and the Malbec by the glass are great. If you plan on drinking more than one glass, you might want to consider getting a bottle. Not that big of a price difference.
The staff always brings out these bread with a little bit of diced tomato, garlic and cheese with a hint of oil. It's very tasty and you can get filled quickly. Picture shown here.
For appetizers. The ceviche is off the charts! Be careful only because if you're by yourself it can be a meal by itself. But if it's a couple of you, very shareable.
Also had the scallop soup, it was a little creamy and had a hint of scallops taste to. It. Was not salty so those who like salt might need to add a little bit along with black pepper.
Main courses, I've been here three times and I've usually gotten the ribeye steak. The cut is a little thinner than what I'm used to in America. But it's still good. Usually served with mashed potatoes and some veggies. The restaurant can cook to your preference. I tend to get medium rare to rare. They did the best they could to get it close to my liking. And it wasn't bad. Picture is available. On a different occasion, I did get the ribs. The four ribs you get are decent size and can fill you up. One of the sides is coleslaw is excellent! It has a mixture of traditional coleslaw but also a few raisins that gives it a sweetness. Balances it out well. Can a side of small french fries.
For dessert, I had the chocolate brownie with a scoop of the basil ice cream. The brownie was tasty as well as the basil ice cream. Definitely a must-have. On a different occasion, I had classic churros with a scoop of vanilla and basil ice cream. Both were really good.
Overall, definitely worth coming to. Just make sure you make a reservation and if you plan on driving over try to park next to the building or on the street but ask the staff for advice. And maybe better to take a...
