Forget Taqueria Honorio or whatever fancy place you've read about in the hotel district, El Alux has the best tacos we had in town. The Cocinita Pibil, made in the traditional way on site in a little wood fire pit, is unbelievably good and dripping with achiote and orange. The salsas are spicy and wonderful, and the Poc-chuc was delicious as well. Enjoy these with a simple cold beer, surrounded by colorful birds in the neighboring garden.
El Alux , with it's homemade outdoor seating, sits right inside one of the the entry points of La Invasión, a community of largely indigenous migrant workers who have built the hotels and resort spas but haven't been paid enough by these exploitative companies to afford housing or other basic necessities in Tulum. The state, for their part, won't provide them with decent housing or subsidies so they can live with dignity while bringing untold fortunes to Tulum's new elite. A few years back a large group of these workers and their families decided to build their own community on unused land that the state had potentially illegally sold to foreign developers. The neighborhood is super friendly, full of terrific food.
I highly suggest folks visiting town spend time in the area and learn about the situation of the residents of La Invasión. There is no fancy Tulum without them, and tourists should stand with them in their demand for a fair share of the profits being made in the city by outside investors.
We tried a number of spots in search of the best tacos, and in the end returned to this humble little spot. Hopefully in the future El Alux will have it's own permanent location closer to...

Read moreThere's a reason why all the reviews are so positive. This place truly is the best in Tulum. The neighborhood is extremely local, and while walking there you might even wonder if this was a good choice at all.
Once you sit you'll be welcomed by Marie and her husband Juan, they are the cutest couple ever, and they are both very passionate about their work, be it cooking, or service.
Over 2 days I tried almost half of the menu, and everything was delicious. We tried: Shrimp chevice Shrimp soup Poc chuc Empanada Quesadilla Salbutes And a few of their drinks ( agua de Maracuja was so good we bought some for our trip back home ).
Salbutes with Cochinita was truly divine! Juicy and and warm. Same goes for the chevice, really outstanding. Their homemade spicy sauce made with 3 different kinds of chilies is spicy, but so complex and flavorful!
Juan was very keen on sharing his knowledge and cooking expertise with us. Such a shame today was our last day in Tulum, we'll miss this...
