So, there I was, stepping into Cannibale Royale, ready for a delicious meal. I couldn't help but notice the menu displayed outside, proudly presenting a mouthwatering hamburger for a reasonable 11 euros. Perfect, I thought. But little did I know, this was just the beginning of my culinary adventure.
Once inside, the menu handed to us revealed a different story. Lo and behold, the same hamburger was now priced at 12.50 euros. Confused, I politely inquired about the sudden price hike. The waitress, with a nonchalant shrug, quipped, "That must be the old menu." Ah, the "old menu" trick, a classic move to keep us on our toes.
Nevertheless, I decided to give the hamburger a shot, hoping it would make up for the menu mishap. To my relief, the burger itself was actually quite decent, accompanied by a side of enjoyable fries. But here's where the plot thickens: the burger was so moist that it practically had its own ecosystem. Juices were dripping left and right, making me question the burger's professionalism. A soggy surprise, indeed.
Now, let's talk ambiance. Picture this: a group of ten lively French guys next to us, throwing mints around like confetti and serenading the entire restaurant with their enthusiastic renditions of French classics. The staff? Well, let's just say they seemed more like overwhelmed spectators than guardians of tranquility. Cannibale Royale was a chaotic circus, leaving me to wonder if I had stumbled into a tourist trap instead.
Taking all of this into account, I find myself torn between conflicting thoughts and mixed flavors. On the one hand, the burger and fries were satisfactory, despite the unexpected moisture situation. On the other hand, the menu confusion and the staff's lack of control over the unruly French chorus didn't quite hit the right notes.
Therefore, my verdict stands at three stars for Cannibale Royale. A fitting rating, as it coincides with the number of euros I overpaid due to the sneaky menu switcheroo. While the food held its ground, the inconsistencies and chaotic atmosphere prevent me from awarding a higher score. Let's hope the restaurant can iron out these quirks and find its true culinary harmony...
Read moreWe came here as a group of 6 at about 12 noon. Had a nice corner table at the rear end of the restaurant. Very promptly after entering the premises, service of the highest standards were rendered to us.
It turned out that it was the owner or the manager of the chain who welcomed us in. He was very patient, pleasant and absolutely charmed all of us with his personality. He explained to us what each dish was about when we asked about certain ones, and even shared stories of how he came up with these unique dishes. Very enlightening and interesting to listen to!
When we ordered our mains and appetisers to share, they were served efficiently. We had the Fried Cauliflower, Bitterbal, Sweet Potato Fries, Beef Tartare, Caesar Salad and Grilled Corn to start with and they were all lip smackingly good! Excellently sized portions that made all of us salivate as we enjoyed each and every bite! The corn was filled with a smokey sweetness that was truly unforgettable. We all enjoyed them thoroughly.
The highly anticipated mains then arrived. We ordered some plates of ribs and flat iron beef. The ribs were legendary in my opinion! It was meaty and not lacking in depth and taste. Well formed and grilled, but the moment you lay your fork into it, the bone slides off from every single layer of meat so cleanly, you can see how it looks like from my photos to know that I'm not exaggerating. Brilliantly done!
The flat iron beef was superbly flavourful and done to a degree that was as requested! If you can spare the time to walk here, you cannot miss out on this one of a kind experience where a slice of this brings you to food heaven again and again.
I may sound like I was paid to write these words but rest assured that I was not. I am a visitor to Amsterdam and am truly impressed with the quality of the meal here, along with the most welcoming atmosphere we ever seen from the owner of a restaurant himself. Five stars probably is an underrated rating. If this restaurant is not packed with people now, it will be in future so be prepared to wait in time to come to savour...
Read moreThe ONLY bad experience our entire trip was this restaurant. We made reservations for 8pm, arriving on time we were set immediately and off to a great start… it took about 5 minutes for our server to greet us but I could tell he was finishing up with a large party and he was busy, so that was understandable. At about 8:15 we ordered 2 cokes and 2 cocktails, garlic pickle cheese app, $100 steak and half chicken… 8:35 we still have NO WATER, no cokes, no cocktails. Our server was busy in the beginning, but he has since cleaned off two tables which are now empty and ready to be seated (aka he isn’t busy enough to not bring AT LEAST the cokes if not water by now) … our app arrives, the food runner drops it and doesn’t ask if we need anything.. STILL DRINKLESS… server comes by “enjoy!” And continues walking, my husband goes to the bar, to just order 2 cokes since our server is now no where to be found. The bartender “you have to order from your table”, my husband “we did and never got them, can I just order 2?” … “no, we are busy… you have to wait!” (It’s now 8:40, we ordered at 8:15) … we immediately grabbed our stuff, paid only for the app and left. Terrible Staff, Terrible Service, Terrible Bartender with a nasty attitude. We were there for so long the Host thought we had already ate, yet we hadn’t even gotten a Coke or WATER. The waiter upon us paying continued to say “well we are busy”… you were literally playing with the stacked glasses at the bar talking, YOU weren’t busy. The...
