Someplace Else Charcoal Eatery — Restaurant in Hibiscus and Bays

I wish I could say we loved it like the rest of the reviews I see here on Google. However, I wanted to be honest on how we felt after dining here. I was looking forward to trying their food because of all the old reviews I saw but was disappointed after. First, the Jalapeno poppers we've ordered looked and tasted very much like the Jalapeno poppers that was bought from Countdown. I knew it did as it had corn in it which was quite unique. The onion rings looked like the one we frequently get from Countdown as well. Nothing wrong with that but I found it quite pricey for something that was instant and bought from the supermarket. The chicken wings tasted bland and dry with no sauce as well as the onion rings which did not include a tartare sauce or something. The ribs were average but were a bit dry too. I had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. I ordered a vegetarian dish, but it tasted strongly like meat, likely due to the restaurant’s charcoal grilling methods.

When I raised this concern with the manager, I was met with dismissiveness. She mentioned I was the first to complain and implied it was hard to believe, as most people apparently enjoy the dish. This response was frustrating and unprofessional.

There was no apology, no offer of a replacement dish, and no acknowledgment of the issue. Both the service and food quality were below par. This was my second visit, and unfortunately, the food wasn’t good the first time either.

We dined at Someplace Else in Orewa this evening. We were greeted at the door by a charming waitress who kept checking on us to make sure we were happy with everything throughout our experience. The service was quick and the food delicious, the flavours were clean and fresh. We shared an entree of battered mushrooms with a yummy blue cheese dressing then one had chargrilled steak cooked to perfection and the other had melt in the mouth glazed pork spare ribs, the star anise flavour was delicious (I chose no fries as the meals were large).
