I was really disappointed with our meal tonight. We met with friends we hadn’t seen for ages and were looking forward to a catch up over a nice meal. The food was good but the service overall was poor. We had 1 gluten free person at our table and we had informed the restaurant at the time of booking of their dietary requirements. When 2 dishes of fried chicken came to the table they told us that they were both GF. Two of our group each questioned the server about ‘are they really both GF? They look different?’ They were told, ‘yes, they are both GF’. Unfortunately when a different server came to the table and we queried it again they informed us that 1 of the dishes was not GF. Too late for our GF (coeliac) diner who had consumed a piece of the chicken. When the error was discovered a manager came quickly to our table and offered an epipen if needed. She said she would go and investigate what had happened and said she would take 1 dish off the bill. I don’t really think that was a satisfactory response when our GF diner is now going to have a week of misery while dealing with the aftermath of consuming gluten. It felt like the servers were pretty much just bringing food out and dumping it on the table. It would be good to tell the whole table what each dish is when it comes out rather than just the 2 people sitting at the end of the table. Following the gluten incident it felt like we were pretty much ignored except for bringing dishes to the table. If it was me running the restaurant I would have been falling over myself trying to make sure the rest of our evening went well. No one even came to ask us if we wanted dessert. Finally, when someone started to clear the table we mentioned we’d like dessert. Unfortunately the deep fried ice cream that we wanted wasn’t available tonight so we went without dessert. Overall good food but I just feel like the business didn’t really care about our experience. The staff were nice but just going through the motions. I expect more from a restaurant that charges as much as they do. It was just a matter of push us through, take our money and get the...
Read moreAfter years of being a loyal customer and frequently visiting White Wong’s, I’ve made the difficult decision that this will be my final visit. What was once a go-to spot for a great dining experience has completely lost its charm. The food, which used to feel special and flavorful, has become disappointingly average. Every dish seemed overly heavy and lacked the finesse it once had. However, what truly pushed me to write this review was the appalling service we experienced during this visit.
Our waitress was shockingly rude and inattentive. Not once during the meal did she check in on our table to see how things were going or if we needed anything. We specifically ordered oysters in addition to the “Feed Me” deal, only to find they weren’t fresh—an unacceptable oversight for a restaurant of this caliber. When we tried to provide feedback to the waitress, she walked off mid-conversation without a word. Her dismissive attitude was outrageous and left us feeling completely disrespected as paying customers.
To make matters worse, we discovered that we were charged for items we never received, including two drinks that were never brought to the table. Mistakes can happen, but this level of carelessness and lack of accountability is unacceptable. The entire experience felt like a far cry from the high standards I once associated with White Wong’s.
It’s truly disheartening to see how much the quality of both the food and service has deteriorated. I won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend the restaurant to others in its current state. For a place that prides itself on offering a premium dining experience, it’s fallen far below...
Read moreWe are here one afternoon for a late arvo/early dinner. We got sat outside which I originally was skeptical of, but it was nice and right by the pier on the water and the sun was out and it was beautiful. A very busy restaurant! But somehow very quaint.
For our early dinner we started with a Bang bang chicken salad which had incorporated chicken and peanut satay style flavours with zingy coriander and beautiful fresh lime. It was absolutely fantastic and delicious, I was originally against ordering a salad but I would definitely go out of my way to eat this again. We followed it up with a classic pork/prawn fried rice which was exactly what you'd expect but had a beautiful smoky/charcoal flavour to the rice which just elevated the dish to another level. With this we also had the char siu pork fillet, which to me is a requirement for any good Chinese meal and the flavour was beautiful and really well paired with its dipping sauce but also with the fried rice!
We also had as an aside the Duck and Chive Xiao long bao. If you aren't familiar with these they are Chinese soup dumplings- that is a duck and chive mix immersed in a rich flavorful broth- inside a dumpling. My only concern is they are typically served with a flat bottomed soup spoon as you are supposed to bite them drink the soup, and then eat the dumpling. But hardly a complaint, as the flavor was so outstanding, such a rich umami flavor with the broth and the duck and chive was a good combination.
We washed it all down with some ice cold wines and ciders and overall was an excellent afternoon for it's price. I would urge people to try this place when they come to...
