I recently had the opportunity to dine with some friends at Modern Shanghai in Glorietta Malls Makati. We were greeted warmly upon arrival and promptly served hot tea on the house. This was a nice finishing touch that helped set the tone for the rest of the meal.
We started with the Modern Shanghai Soup, which was a delectable combination of fish fillet, egg white, and chopped bok choy. The soup was light and flavorful, and it was the ideal way to start our meal.
We then decided on the Emperor's Feast 6-course meal. This included egg rice, string beans, deep-fried pork, sweet and sour fish fillet, xiaolong bao, and sautéed water spinach with minced pork. The meal was well-balanced, with each dish providing a distinct flavor profile that complemented the others. The egg rice was light and fragrant, and the string beans were crisp and flavorful. The crispy deep-fried pork was tender on the inside, and the sweet and sour fish fillet was lightly battered and flavorful. The xiaolong bao was a tasty steamed dumpling filled with a flavorful broth and tender meat. The sautéed water spinach with minced pork was a traditional dish expertly prepared, with a perfect balance of flavors.
We also ordered the Shanghai Vegetable and Pork Wanton Noodles. This dish included egg noodles, pork wantons, and a flavorful soup with fresh spring onions on top. The noodles were cooked perfectly, with a nice bite and texture, and the pork wantons were juicy and flavorful. The soup was light and fragrant, making it a filling and hearty dish.
Finally, I ordered the Ripe Mango Shake, a refreshing drink that was the perfect way to end our meal. The shake was creamy and sweet, with a good flavor balance.
My overall impression of Modern Shanghai was pretty positive. The food was flavorful and well-prepared, and the service was friendly and attentive. While it was not the best Chinese restaurant I've ever visited, I would definitely recommend it to others looking for a satisfying...
Read moreOverall excellent food, service and location. Everything tasted great even the soup number #5 that my husband tried. We will definitely come back to try more of their food. Highly recommended for everyone. June 2024 update: we came back with a couple of friends and they did not disappoint us. Service was excellent, food was excellent. They brought me the wrong order but it was corrected in a timely manner. Even our friends said they will come back to try other dishes. It’s time for another update Aug 2025. A little disappointed this time. The place wasn’t even full for lunch time on a Saturday. I ordered braise beef noodle with one leaf of bachoy and two small pieces of fat. I requested for a couple more pieces of vegetables. Glad they gave me some without extra charge. I am changing my review from five star but I am keeping service at five star since their server still gave great service. Restaurant doesn’t realize that consistency is the key to having a successful business we’re people will keep coming back. I guess I won’t be coming back...
Read moreHere is my review and experience at Glorietta branch:
Service: 0/10 The waiter informed us that our order would be served within 15 to 20 minutes. We verified if all items would be served within that timeframe, and the waiter confirmed. Despite several follow-ups after 20 minutes, our order was completed after 40 minutes, even though the restaurant was not full. We reported this to the manager but received no apology.
Food: 3/10 The Hakaw and Chicken Feet were freshly cooked. However, the other dishes were not served hot. We had to return the hot pot because it lacked tofu. The food tasted bland compared to what they serve at their Evia branch.
Recommendation: If you're in the south and enjoy their food, do yourself a favor and visit the Evia branch. The food quality and service are far superior to the...
