Well, we had a long day and had a hankering for some Vietnamese food, and An Nam was close and had great reviews...but too good a set of reviews, I had to find out, so I walked over to place an order right at 7:00 PM when they opened.
Atmosphere: The entrance is small and cozy and seats 20-25 pax, and the soon I entered I was welcomed by the co-owner Katy who was sitting right at entrance rolling some very tasty summer rolls. She told me that they are so busy that she has to turn people away because she is afraid that she can not give best experience to each customer so she rather make less money than give a less than good experience...could this be true you ask?
Food: YES! She was not lying about wanting best experience. We got the Summer Rolls, Bun Bo (noodles + beef + nem), and two Banh Mis with Pork Belly. The summer rolls were fresh (because she was rolling them herself while I was there). The Bo Bun was great with soft, springy noodles, nice spring rolls fried to perfection, and well seasoned and cooked lemongrass beef. She offered us the fish sauce dip and some of her husbands homemade chili sauce (HOT, be warned, but good). Lastly, I went overboard and got pork belly Banh mi, which was amaze-balls. I got a nicely cut piece of meat where the skin was crispy and meat tender with all the veggie and fix-ems
Cost: I got all this amazing food for what I believe was a great price at EUR28.30. I have lived in Asia over 15 years, and been to Ho Chi Minh/Hanoi and the food was on par to the food if not better.
Delivery/restaurant: The place books up FAST and seating area is small, so if you want to get spot, call them and make a booking early. They don't do UberEats often to avoid letting delivery orders impact in-restaurant experience.
Oh to be clear, the food is northern inspired (Hanoi), so flavorings can be different, but food...
Read moreI only tried the beef pho, so I can’t speak to the quality of the other dishes—they might be great, as this is clearly a popular spot.
However, the pho was disappointing, especially since I was looking forward to a hearty, satisfying bowl. It wasn’t just average—it fell short in many ways.
Here’s a constructive breakdown: • Broth: It completely lacked flavor. I had to ask for lime wedges and heavily rely on sriracha to make it taste like anything. • Toppings: There were no fresh bean sprouts or Thai basil, only a sparse amount of scallions and cilantro, which didn’t add much. • Beef: While there was a decent amount of it, the pieces were very small and pre-cooked—not the thinly sliced raw beef that cooks in the hot broth as you eat, which is a key part of the pho experience. • Noodles: These were shredded into tiny pieces for no apparent reason. Diners should be able to enjoy long noodles or cut them as they prefer.
Overall, the pho lacked the essential elements that make it flavorful and authentic. For such a popular spot, it was really...
