We tried Solomillo Restaurante because it was advertised as an upscale steakhouse with a unique menu. We made a reservation, but when we arrived, there were only two other tables that were occupied. That alone should have been an indication to leave. We were seated right away, but instead of seating us in a quiet area of this empty restaurant, we were seated at a table within earshot of a table of very noisy, ill- mannered children, while their parents were seated further away at a table of their own. Every item on the menu was a la carte. Although the menu offered several different cuts of meat along with varied grades of each cut from different areas of Europe, etc. the choices were very unclear and not because it was in Spanish. After having it explained to us by the waiter, we managed to order & chose a couple of sides. We also ordered some bread to start and as it was served, our waiter poured some mix of oils onto our plates & then disappeared. The bread tasted burnt and was extremely hard to chew. A short time later, while still working on eating the bread, our plates were taken away without even being asked. The sides came immediately, while the steaks were presented seperately on plates. There were only two of us, but neither steak was grilled as ordered. Both meats were raw & bloody. After sending both steaks back, one three times, the (hot) sides were already cold. The noise around us was extremely annoying & the waiters were aware of our discomfort & yet, did not offer to switch our table, nor did they offer any apologies for the mishap in the presentation of the steaks & cold side dishes. All in all, this was definitely NOT an upscale meal & trust me when I say that we are not unfamiliar with fine dining. What El Solomillo describes as a different type of menu was definitely correct, but not in a good way..... Avoid this restaurant if you're in search of a great meal. It is definitely not worth the price nor the aggravation. Their unique style needs a total overhaul & they should look for a chef that knows how to...
Read moreFans of sirloin steak need to rush to Solomillo, the Alexandria Hotel’s newest restaurant in Barcelona. As its name suggests, the primary focus of the menu is spectacular cuts of sirloins, so much so that it’s the only main they serve. That doesn’t mean the menu is boring by any means, and the different weights of the meat are individual for each customer’s preference.
I love steak, and was happy to meet my friend for lunch on Saturday at Solomillo. We dined on the beautiful terrace, and the city provided the perfect backdrop as we bordered Mallorca Street. The restaurant design is modern yet relaxed, and keeps with the style of the hotel and all the furniture is Spanish-made.
We decided to try crystal bread with tomato and a plate of cured meat to start our meal. The meat was salty and delicious, and a great assortment to sample. The bread was fresh and delicious, and paired nicely with the tomato.
I chose 500 gr of Rubia Gallega for my main, while my friend opted for 175 grams of Nebraska Black Angus. The steaks were cooked to perfection and both were juicy and tender. My steak melted in my mouth like butter.
We shared a variety of sides, including grilled artichokes, spice watercress, radish and radish sauce, and Basque Country style lettuce and onion salad. They all offered a tangy bite that paired with the tender meat well. The subtle heat of the radish and the earthy flavor of the watercress and artichokes complimented excellently.
For dessert, I always tend toward chocolate, and in this case I loved the flourless chocolate cake. It was moist and rich. My friend indulged in cheesecake with strawberry sauce that was beautifully presented.
Solomillo is a sirloin lover’s dream come true, but with great service, beautiful designs, and delicious sides, it’s truly a restaurant...
Read moreHorrible experience! We stayed at the Alexandra Hotel as part of our honeymoon. The last evening in Barcelona we decided to have a nice dinner at the restaurant. We dressed up for a nice dinner and came down for a table. This was later in the evening and there were at least 3 tables open on the patio. We asked if those tables were available and were told they were and it would just be a minute. Not an issue, we waited patiently. While we were waiting, a couple of men came in from outside dressed in shorts and t-shirts. While we stood there, the waiter who told us to wait, chatted with the men and proceeded to seat them at the table for two . Then he came back in and we assumed he would seat us, but he only took out place settings for that table and then menus. All while we kept standing and waiting for our table. We weren't sure why they were seated while we had requested a table first and kept waiting for seating. After 5-10 minutes, we gave up and walked away. It left a bad impression about the restaurant, staff and even hotel. Mostly because it left the assumption that since we were visitors and not completely fluent in Spanish, we could be ignored. Not the feeling you want...
