Ethiopian Restaurant Gonder — Restaurant in Madrid

The restaurant has very cool decor, and a very authentic feel. The people are clearly from Ethiopia, pretty sure it's a family place. There are plenty of seats downstairs if the ground level is full. The only reason I'm giving it four stars and not five is because of the menu. The menu design is terrible, it needs redesigning. There are no pictures, which, unless you're well informed about the cuisine, is a necessity. But I really think all the menus need are some pictures or a slightly better translation into Spanish to make things clearer. We got a little appetizer: Samusas: lentils in a triangle crust, lightly fried with a sauce. It was very well done, and tasty finger food. For our main course we ordered bayenetu, which is a platter of various piles of food on a light bread that you eat with your fingers. It was delicious! Very messy to eat, but every other table had it too, so we weren't alone in getting our fingers greasy. There were a lot of delicious flavors involved. That plus the previously mentioned appetizer was enough for two people. We also got the cold mint green tea to drink, which was lovely and very refreshing. The bathrooms were even well stocked with toilet paper, soap, and paper towels (which can honestly be a rarity in Madrid)! They didn't tell us at first that you have to go upstairs to pay, so keep that in mind. All in all, it's a great little restaurant, well...

Fue una experiencia realmente incómoda. Primero pedimos un entrante (sambusas) y 2 platos principales para 2 comensales (Tibs y Kik Wet). Se olvidaron del entrante y nos trajeron tras una espera relativamente larga el plato, una torta esponjosa de fondo con la ternera (la cual picaba pese a que seleccionamos la opción de la carta sin picante) y una salsa en un cazo que también picada. Resulta que en ese plato estaban contenidos los dos que pedimos y no nos avisaron, esa salsa eran los Kik Wet, por suerte compartimos algo (aunque mi pareja casi no pudo comer porque todo picaba mucho pese a que no pedimos picante). Cuando nos dimos cuenta de que esa era toda la comida, para que ella pudiese comer algo más les pedí que trajesen el entrante del que se olvidaron y que no le había dado importancia en un inicio... bueno, casi que hasta se enfadaron por pedírselo y para colmo cuando llegó no eran las empanadillas de lentejas del entrante sino un plato nuevo de lentejas... se lo comenté y fueron extremadamente groseros conmigo cuando era ya la segunda vez que se equivocaban y para evitar el conflicto decidimos quedarnos con el plato, pues la camarera nos dijo que era más caro que el entrante y que nos merecía más la pena, tampoco queríamos obligarles a hacer un plato nuevo así que lo aceptamos. Este plato nuevamente picaba mucho y mi pareja no pudo siquiera acabarlo y eso que ya tenían constancia de que el plato anterior nos había parecido que estaba demasiado picante antes de traerlo. Pese a ello, con educación fui a pagar e intentaron cobrarme el precio del plato que no habíamos pedido en lugar del entrante, algo que me pareció el colmo, les dije que no estaba dispuesto a pagar de más por un error que ellos habían cometido y de nuevo fueron extremadamente groseros. Para colmo, ahora revisando la carta desde casa, estoy viendo que por el plato Kik Wet me cobraron de más, algo de lo que siquiera me di cuenta in situ... Sinceramente, no recuerdo una experiencia tan mala en ningún sitio, el personal nos hizo sentir realmente mal, grosero, déspota y mal educado. La comida, si no tuviese absolutamente toda picante sería un concepto interesante que no estaría mal, eso sí, el precio es totalmente desorbitado por las cantidades que ponen. Nada recomendable, me sorprende realmente las buenas reviews que tiene, de hecho yo fui confiado al sitio por estas reviews y nada más lejos de...
