This was our final night in Zermatt, and we were looking for something special to top the other restaurants we visited during our stay. We settled on Carbon Zermatt because it was my mother-in-law’s birthday and we were looking for something a little upscale.
Sadly we were disappointed, and the average comment from everyone at the table was, “I’m not impressed”. To start, the food was not terrible, it was simply just ok. And for the price, it was a little less than ok. The real disappointment was the strange service. Compared to every restaurant we have visited in this vacation, including Zurich, St. Moritz, and Zermatt, the service here was the lacking.
This was the only restaurant in our Switzerland tour where we did not feel welcome. We arrived 10 minutes early, and when we mentioned we were a bit early, he called out that we were exactly ten minutes early. Then without further word he grabbed menus and showed us to our table. We asked about the wines and he gave us a wine menu. We also asked about cocktails, which he told us about the special cocktail of the evening, but failed to mention the restaurant had a cocktail menu with “mocktails”, which our children would have been pleased to order, and my mother-in-law would have likely ordered a cocktail. The waiter also started the evening informing us that the chateaubriand was out of stock.
The waiter also told us that they only have 2 orders of onion soup left. In the end we skipped the soup but placed our order. We noticed the menu had chocolate fondant, a family favorite, but it required 15 minutes to prep. Since everyone at the table wanted it, we all placed our order in advance.
I ordered the Cafe de Paris, a pork cutlet with sauce and potatoes. It was ok, but nothing special. My daughter ordered the hamburger with raclette cheese. It was overly greasy and the bun was soaked in grease. We ordered a bottle of white wine, but the waiter came to open it and put it on ice. Then he forgot to pour the glasses after the food arrived and we had to ask to be poured.
My wife and mother-in-law ordered the king crab. All the dishes were good, but they were not great. He waiter asked if I needed pepper or salt, and I requested pepper. Then several minutes later the bus boy brings the salt and pepper. By then I had already started eating.
Towards the end of the meal, we had a bottle of wine close to finished, and my glass still had wine in it but my wife and mother-in-law had empty glasses. Then the waiter came and put most of the wine into my glass and barely had any left for my wife and her mother.
Finally the dessert arrived, and the waiter informed us that he made a mistake and they were almost sold out of the chocolate fondant. Instead of 5 we ordered, they could only provide us with 4. So we agreed.
The fondant was terrible. I have had fondant all over the world, and this was not fondant. It was fondant batter in a bowl with ice cream on top. It was not cooked at all. My wife also mentioned that hers was completely cold.
To top off the disappointing experience, the waiter brought us the bill immediately after clearing the plates, which we found odd. Normally in Europe, you can sit at the table when you have a reservation and are not rushed out. Here, the waiter immediately brought the bill, and also charged us for 5 fondants (they were short one) so we had to have him correct that.
Overall, for the reviews we read on TheFork an on Google Reviews, this was not a great experience. We will not be returning here the next time we visit Zermatt. This was a solid...
Read moreMy friend and I ate here because it was in our hotel. In hindsight, I wish we hadn’t. The service and atmosphere was fine, but the food was mediocre at best, except for the Caesar salad, which was almost inedible. The Caesar tasted like someone confused mayonnaise for Caesar dressing and then they tried to hide it with a mountain of Parmesan. There are a lot of places to eat in Zermatt and you can probably just...
Read moreThe restaurant was recommended by the hotel staff during my check-in. I was told the restaurant is run by a Michelin-star chef.
Food is amazing! It is kind of french fusion with mediterranean style. I ordered the pork cutlet and fish cod. Both are presented very well. Ingredients are fresh and saucing is excellent.
Service is good and recommend this to...
