Indus is a very traditional, gorgeous Indian restaurant. The atmosphere is great with gentle music and attentive staff (some do not speak Thai fluently, but they are patient). Every dish is presented with classy styles, befitting of a Michelin Starred Restaurant as well as a price to match. The ingredients incredible, their tea is calming. Their portions are of the medium to small size, and the Lassi (milk looking drink) I want to say was interesting. I tried the salted lassi and let me tell you it was a great experience I will be trying once. If you want a cup, anything but salted will probably taste better, not to say the salted lassi was bad, it was just concerningly disconcerting to my tongue. However, the main gripe of this place, to me, is that this is very ‘bland’ Indian food when compared to most other Indian restaurants. Out of every Indian restaurant I’ve had, this is the weakest in flavor but however, it is by no means bad. This is most likely as the dishes are catered towards foreigners who may prefer more pleasant aromatic flavors rather than the striking dishes of most other restaurants. The restaurant has a very mellow flavoring in all dishes which I believe would be very much liked by any who may find most Indian food too strong. This is a good place to take someone who’s not good with strong flavors to introduce them to Indian food if you are willing to pay the price. Otherwise, if you are looking for, with all due respect to Indus for their gentle, finely crafted flavors (deserving of their star), “authentic” Indian food—head...
Read moreIndus occupies a very pleasant and relatively (for Bangkok!) quiet location in an old house and garden, and the interior decor is simple, with a sub-continental overtone here and there. It all works rather well to create an understated and relaxing dining environment.
While fairly lightly staffed, the service was friendly, attentive and efficient, with only a couple of minor glitches that I noticed. Professionally trained staff who were able to talk knowledgeably about the dishes on the menu.
I had rather wanted to try the tasting menu but there were a couple of dishes my partner couldn't eat, so we opted for a la carte. I was impressed with the recipes, and the subtle combinations of flavour that emanated from every dish. For starters we ordered the mutton chukka (gorgeous quality of meat, perfectly cooked) and khumb galouti (finely chopped and spiced mushrooms on bliny-sized parathas) which were almost meat-like in their texture. Mains were tandoori sea bass, Punjab-style, a superb effort; and a quite rich Malabar prawn curry which was enjoyable but perhaps the least successful of our selections. We finished off with a yummy kulfi and a coconut sorbet (which my partner claims is the best she's ever eaten). All dishes were lovingly thought out and executed, and far from your typical Indian restaurant fare.
The wine list felt a bit random, but a Penfolds Chardonnay did the trick quite okay with the food.
All in all a most enjoyable evening and I look forward to going back -- next time for the...
