My partner and I were in Birmingham for a concert, and after a lot of review reading, we decided on Pasture. We pitched up at 12:00 on Easter Sunday without booking and just about made it in; it very rapidly became very busy - and no surprise, given the experience.
The atmosphere: really nice. Comfortable seats, and although the table was small, it didn't feel cramped. Smart, stylish, but still relaxed.
The food: honestly amazing. I'm really hard to please. I had the curried mussels, which isn't what you would think - it's more thai themed with coconut. They were perfectly cooked and came with a garlic flatbread - delicious and not too heavy.
I then had a rump steak, blue. I have no words. It's hard to get good quality steak when eating out. It's even more difficult to get good quality steak that is cooked the way you ask for. The rump steak I received was like butter. Melt-in-the-mouth. It was clearly exceptional. And! It was cooked blue. It was phenomenal. The rump steak I will forever hold the standard of rump steak to, and this isn't hyperbole.
It comes on its own on the plate, and you order sides. I had the beef fat cooked chips - really fabulous - and the beef dripping béarnaise sauce. Scrummy.
My partner had the chicken wings, which he clearly enjoyed, followed by the rib eye steak. Again, cooked to his requested standard (it shouldn't be that hard to get this, but it really is). He had the mushroom side - again, really beautifully cooked. No hard centre from undercooking, not overcooked - just great.
For dessert my partner had the chocolate dome with caramel sauce, which had popping candy in it - I tried a bit and it is quite sweet so be prepared (not a bad thing, just so you know). I had the rhubarb basque cheesecake. It was really lovely, very creamy and lovely. Ironically, I had just discovered basque cheesecakes not that long ago and really like them as they don't have a biscuit underlayer - so it was great to see one on the menu.
The drinks: I tried the "Pineapple Picante". I actually am not a big cocktail drinker but I just thought I would try one given the standard the restaurant seemed to be keeping. I really enjoyed it. It was expensive, as cocktails are, but I would never have put those things together in a cocktail myself and it was beautifully done. The description reads "pineapple infused tequila blanco, mezcal, lime, pineapple cordial, chilli tincture". It was quite the mouth/senses experience! Kinda smoky/spicy/sweet - really enjoyed it. At the end I tried the Ximénez-Spínola dessert wine - that was also really wonderful. Very subtle, fruity, peach/plum - again, I'm definitely not a wine drinker - as you can tell I like sweet and spicy things and I don't really have any of the required vocabulary for such a palate, I just felt like everything was really thoughtfully chosen and it was just a great experience.
The service: we were served by Victoria. She was great! I really appreciated how well she understood the menu - when I was pondering cocktails she was able to describe in great detail how the ones I was interested in were made - which helped me decide. I also REALLY liked that when I asked "what would you go for?" she actually offered an opinion! No wishy-washy approach to that question - it's probably the worst question a server can get honestly so I apologise for asking, Victoria - but it was REALLY helpful to me that you expressed an opinion. She also, when I wanted to know more about the dessert wine, brought the bottle over for me to see. She was very attentive and chatty, but not overbearing... she was great, thank you. We felt very well looked after despite how busy it was in there.
Value for money: It's not cheap but I didn't think it was expensive either for what you get, and for us personally it was worth every penny. Had a great experience. I did feel quite the glutton afterwards and we didn't need to eat for the rest of the day... so maybe it was considered a meal saved, too, haha.
So yes - 12/10, would come again if we are ever back in the area!...
Read moreWe celebrated our anniversary at Pasture Birmingham and from the moment we arrived, the experience was nothing short of exceptional. I had mentioned our special occasion in the booking, and to our surprise and delight, every member of staff greeted us with warm anniversary wishes — it truly set the tone for a thoughtful and memorable evening.
We started with a bottle of El Vínculo, the restaurant’s exclusive red wine. One of the team shared that the grapes were hand-selected in Spain by the owner of the Pasture group — a lovely personal touch. The wine had hints of dark chocolate, and while it was described as full-bodied, I found it beautifully balanced — just slightly lighter than a full-bodied red, but richer than a medium. It paired perfectly with our steak and never felt overpowering.
Although we told them we were too full for a starter (we had snacked earlier), they generously brought out a complimentary one anyway — fried beef balls with a Korean-style sauce. Absolutely delicious, and honestly one of the best bites of the night.
For our main, we ordered the 1kg porterhouse steak, cooked medium rare. We were advised it would take 40 minutes due to the charcoal grill, but it arrived in around 25–30 mins — perfectly timed. The steak was grilled to perfection with a mouthwatering smoky aroma, and just the right level of doneness — not too rare at all.
It came with two sauces and two sides — we chose chimichurri and peppercorn, plus the tomato salad and beef fat chips. The tomato salad was a game changer — it cut through the richness of the steak fat and elevated every bite. After the wine had time to decant, the pairing with the steak was spot-on.
Though we skipped the tableside steak presentation (we were starving and knew what we wanted!), we noticed how the staff took time with other diners, explaining the cuts and helping them choose — it’s clear they care about the guest experience.
By the end, we were too full for dessert, but the team still brought out a lovely chocolate fudge treat to celebrate our anniversary — such a thoughtful gesture.
Special thanks to Kamran, who was incredibly attentive and even took some amazing photos for us — genuinely better than what we’ve experienced in most restaurants, even in London.
Pasture Birmingham truly made our anniversary special. We felt taken care of, celebrated, and very well fed. We’ll definitely be back — the tomahawk is next...
Read moreMy wife treated me to a birthday lunch here, and I have to say it was superb.
I had heard of this place and had been meaning to check it out for a while. By the time I got here, I suspected the hype would lead to disappointment, but no, the hype is very much justified.
The staff were all so friendly and welcoming, and so knowledgeable about the menu. I was thrilled to see online their beef wasn't haallal and I asked again when I ordered just to be sure.
As I was with my vegetarian wife, I didn't do the thing where I choose a cut on display, I opted for T-Bone Steak with Whiskey Teriyaki sauce. I asked for their recommendation and they said medium rare, which I accepted. My wife went with the Celeriac Wellington. We got a side of Skinny Fries to share, but I asked that they be cooked in vegetarian oil for my wife, and they accommodated this.
They told us the food would take a while as they don't rush it, and I was absolutely fine with that. That's how it should be. For drinks to start, I went for the Smoked Old Fashioned Cocktail. When it was brought out, I was asked if I wanted to make a video of it before the smoke was let out. I declined, but it's nice that they ask. It was a well made drink, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My wife had a Raspberry Cooler from the Mocktail menu.
I looked through the Argentian red section of the wine list, and ordered a glass of 2022 Norton Altura Malbec to accompany my steak when it came out. One thing that took me by surprise is the steak is pre-sliced, which I personally think looks less aesthetic, but I forgot about that when I actually tasted it.
I don't eat steak very often, mainly on special occasions, so I'm no expert, but this was the best steak I've ever had. Cooked to perfection, juicy, flavoursome. The sauce was lovely. I tried a little of my wife's Wellington, and that was delicious too.
For dessert, we shared a Tira-Miso, which was ok, nothing too special. They forgot to bring out spoons with it, but we were able to quickly flag them over to rectify that and they were apologetic about it, so no big issue. I was served a couple of brownies with a lit candle and a birthday message written in chocolate sauce, that was a nice touch.
I enjoyed my time here overall, and I would definitely love to...
